Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

You know, I would kinda like a "Black Widow" move soon. It could fit: the Avengers are underground so a espionage movie would work.

If I wasn't sold before, I am now.

They're also quickly running out of ways to justify Widow still being a spy while also being one of the most recognizable people on the planet. She really should've gotten that espionage solo movie in Phase 2, but yadda yadda Perlmutter.

there are dimensions that are so mind-bending that you can barely perceive them; there are dimensions where a lot of the Ditko images come from; there are dimensions that are just mind trips that the human mind can barely fathom which is why it’s hard to turn them into something to show audiences in November

Possibly going to see THE CHAOS DIE-MEN-SHUN, perhaps?

I mean, James Bond pulled it off for twenty movies.

The only problem now is giving her a plot that allows for spy-style action and espionage.

Yes, but you were responding to Widow being recognizable. I was echoing your post for emphasis in response to the criticism raised immediately after about writing an espionage plot. Because it's still true.

Every MCU film has been Superhero Insert Genre Here. Black Widow would be Superhero James Bond.

Espionage doesn't necessarily mean she has to go undercover. She could still investigate things.

Besides, The Winter Soldier, which many people consider to be the best MCU movie to date, was as much of a spy thriller as it was a superhero action movie.

Anybody getting tired of the Inception-esque stuff going on in Doctor Strange or is it just me?

I like it. It's not like it's showing up all over the place other than here and Inception (which was six years ago), and they're doing some different stuff with it.

Im surprise nobody use it after inception so yeah, I kinda like it

And I really want a Black widow movie, but Im thinking what kind of villian she deserve: Hydra is overplay and pretty dead a this point, havng a regular terrorist would make a spy movie with just Marvel atach to it, I kept saying A.I.M will be best choice.

They already had AIM. They made Extremis.

Unless you're asking for MODOK and guys in beekeeper suits. In which case...yeah. I don't quite know how to feel about that. We lucked out with Arnim Zola (really kind of knocked that adaptation out of the park). Not sure I want to tempt fate.

Maybe another Black Widow, although Agent Carter already had an evil counterpart Russian spy.

A.I.M would be cool, and M.O.D.O.K is the best anything ever, but I'd be worried about the tonal clash of having M.O.D.O.K as the main villain of a Black Widow movie.

[up][up]I'd be down with that. Actually— I mentioned this before, but I'd like to see an adaptation-in-spirit of Thunderbolts. Black Widow, Hawkeye, Zemo, Ross. The pieces are there. Taskmaster could be a good addition to the team/first foe/frenemy.

Maybe do some flashbacks to how Clint and Natasha met, how she was recruited (assuming they haven't aged completely out of that particular story). Or not.

[up]Between Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and Ant-Man I like that we're finally getting some more interesting-looking bad guys instead of still more executives and paramilitary types, but it might still be too soon for MODOK. Then again, they made the Guardians work. Who knows?

Well, we just came out of Civil War and we had Spider-Man in it...why not bring H.A.M.M.E.R. into the MCU? Let everybody else feel the pain of Norman Osborne becoming one of the most powerful men in the US!

Oh. My. God. I just realized that we hadn't introduced the Skrulls into the MCU. Everybody, everybody, EVERYBODY, FOUR WORDS- BLACK WIDOW: SECRET INVASION!

...Dammit, you're right. That would be pretty good for a spy movie. Sadly I think the Skrulls are stuck in limbo with the Fantastic Four. Maybe there are some other shapeshifters or doppelgangers they could pragmatically adapt?

Like the Life Model Decoys, even? I'd love to see a development from the TV show make the crossover back into the movies.

As long as we're blue-skying it anyway, I mean.

James Gunn said a while back that Marvel shares the rights to the Skrulls with Fox, I think.

[up] Pretend that I don't know what that means. Does that mean that, theoretically, we COULD have a Black Widow fighting Skrulls? Because Joss Whendon says that he's willing to come back to Marvel for a Black Widow movie. I know I'm just daydreaming but this is a really cool idea!
