Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

So I was on Tumblr the other day (I know it's popular to shit on tumblr, but it's my go-to for mcu pictures, gifs, etc.) and saw a split-screen pic someone posted of Cap in Civil War. Before the Accords were passed, he had an Avengers patch on his shoulder. After the Accords, it's gone. but you can still see where it was.

I just found that an interesting detail, and wonder if any of you happened to notice it?

I noticed that a while back. Pretty amusing.

When we're done, there won't be anything left.

I noticed it. It was a nice detail. Also potential plausible deniability if the operation went south. He could try to save the others by claiming he and Sam were acting independently and not as members of the Avengers (for all the good it did them in the end).

Plausible deniability is a good reason, and a very Steve one, but I suspect it's not the only one. I think, even if he didn't consciously think it, it could've been a way of saying "if this is what the Avengers are going to be, I want no part of it".

But that's just armchair theorizing wink.

Neat...I have to put this on my mental list of meaningful details a lot of people don't notice, alongside with the Howling Commanders singing a song about a lost men in the pup where Cap recruits them, and Cap later sitting in the same bar (now bombed out) grieving over Bucky and Bucky's muzzle covering exactly the part of his face which Cap's mask leaves open.

[up] There's also the fact that in the first Iron Man movie, one of Tony Stark's nicknames was "the Merchant of Death." Which was actually the nickname for Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, before he created the Nobel Prize. Think about that: Tony could have simply invented a prize instead of a whole suit of power armor.

I think I'd rather have a suit of power armor than a prize, personally.

I mean, the Nobel Prize is actually a million dollars, so...I would want the prize.

[up][up][up] That would be a million Tony has to pay, not one he would get.

And a single Iron Man suit is worth several million dollars. Plus you can use it for things.

Right, but unless you can sell it (which would be weapons selling, which would be illegal), then the only thing you can do is wear it. And I don't really want to wear an Iron Man suit.

Why we need Ms. Marvel.

I mean, Kamala can shapeshift, but she mainly sticks to shrinking or growing. Or growing specific parts of her while leaving the rest the same. Only rarely does she actually use her powerset for anything more complex than that.

Hell, she's still wearing a uniform under her clothes and changing rather than just morphing a set of clothes as an outer shell and shifting it as needed. That's shapeshifter 101!

I mean, we do need Kamala, but I wouldn't necessarily call her "a real shapeshifter" especially when it's prefaced it by discounting Mystique.

Well, depending on how the powers work from person to person, having entirely supernaturally-generated clothes can result in some really awkward situations sometimes...

Loki is the shapeshifter of the MCU, even though he uses the abilities less than he could.

Although wearing an actual costume and mask is very sensible if you snap back to form if you lose consciousness

It's not like Reed who stays stretched disgustingly sprawled over everything, noodle limbs all askew when he gets knocked out

Snapping back would imply that the shapeshifter has to remain constantly focused on the form they're taking or else they automatically revert to their "default". This typically isn't the case. The superpower is generally in changing shape, not in retaining it. A shapeshifter who loses their powers or is knocked out typically just gets locked in-form.

Like, there's never been a time where Mystique has been knocked out and promptly became naked. Except the movies, maybe, but they're dumb.

Skrulls maybe

They're supposed to only revert back on death but it's been on unconsciousness sometimes

Also Kamala CAN shapechange her clothes but it slows her down. Her costume is treated with a special non unstable moleculed compound that's super good at changing shape. But it loses some of that elasticity if it gets wet so it's a good idea to wear street clothes for everyday life

Of all the "Marvels", I'm the most interested in Blue Marvel right now. I'd like to see how the MCU handles the concept of antimatter with him, as well as his origin involving his son and best friend-turned-nemesis.

Would you want them to include his 'asked politely to stop being a superhero because it makes us uncomfortable that you're black and also super powerful' backstory?

[up]In a passing reference to his past, sure. Not sure if it should be the main focus, though, since it wouldn't be quite as character-driven as his tinkering with the antimatter universe and his personal quest to find his son.

Doing a quick scan through his story, Blue Marvel would be perfect for a "superhero of the past" story set during the past - in the middle of the Cold War and Civil Rights Movement - if Marvel were brave enough to make that into a film.

Ant-Man could even be a contemporary.

The family dynamics could also be interesting. We've got some look at fathers and mothers throughout the MCU, but I don't think we have any who are Happily Married types with nonpowered spouses and children. Tony has daddy issues, Steve is an orphan, and the Pyms are ruled out by that. His powerset is kinda similar to Carol's but with these heroes it's usually less about their abilities and more about the stories behind them.
