Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'd be up for more crossovers, provided they're for characters who don't have their own movies.

I think the time for stand alone movies is over after Doctor Strange, at least until we crack another new corner of the MCU (IE in an Inhuman movie). From now on, Team up movies will be the norm.

Black Panther? Captain Marvel? Spider-Man: Homecoming?

We already know that Ironman will be in Spider-man homecoming, so, another team up movie. Since Bucky is in Wakanda I would be very surprised if this doesn't become relevant in Black Panther, the only question is if he will stay a bucksycle. We will see when we know more about Captain Marvel, but since she doesn't have much of a supporting cast of her own, I am ready to bet that someone ends up in her movie, too.

Tony being in Homecoming in a team-up capacity seems unlikely given that this is Spidey's inaugural movie, all about building up his mythos and introducing his characters. More likely he'll have a role similar to Bruce's in Iron Man 3.

[up] With Happy also cast? Nah, he will most likely be like Falcon in The Winter Soldier. Not around all the time, but enough so that Peter has someone to talk to when it comes to his abilities.

I'm expecting Tony to have a mentor position in a small role, but not actually do any Iron Manning at any point in the film. I also wouldn't be surprised if he becomes a Badass in Distress at the hands of the Tinkerer or something.

I expect Tony Stark to appear but not Iron Man.

I am sure Tony will suit up...why miss out on a great opportunity to sell more Ironman toys?

I don't know. After the absolute disaster of his last suiting up, I can picture him thinking that maybe Captain America isn't the only one who died in that Siberian Gulag.

Maybe Iron Man died there too.

That seems remarkably unlikely. He didn't even stop suiting up when he blew up all his suits.

I can see it going either way. If he suits up, there's a concern that he'll distract from Spider-Man, whose movie this is supposed to be. But if he doesn't, then it's missing a golden opportunity to go, "Hey, detractors who don't want another f*cking reboot and keep saying there's nothing new left to see, we've got Iron Man in our Spider-Man movie."

Stark is the MCU's Wolverine, after all.

Iron Man being in Homecoming gives me less reason to see it actually, and I never planned on watching to begin with.

[up][up] I think as long as the climactic fight against the Vulture is 90% Spider-Man, then there isn't a risk of Iron Man overshadowing him.

Since one of the villians is a disgruntled Stark employee, mybe the Vulture will have a way to disable the Iron Man suit, which he does immediately after Tony tries to engage him. Or perhaps the Tinkerer will have taken the Iron Man suit offline before the final confrontation even happens.

[up][up][up]That's pretty much what I've been thinking from the get-go. Using "Spider-Man actually gets to interact with other superheroes this time" is a very obvious and immediate selling point to use in the face of "Why are they rebooting this thing again?" criticism.

That and Spider-man being played by someone who can pass as a teenager while taking advantage of the High school setting.

The interactions between Peter, Aunt May, and Tony in CW make me want to see Homecoming. Oh and Michael Keaton as the main villain, that to.

As for crossovers, I've said before in other places that if they end up making a Doctor Strange sequel, I'd love to see Scarlet Witch show up and interact with Strange.

And Finn Jones does sort of have the posture of Danny Rand.
