Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Poor Falcon, the only one with a costume nothing like that.

Oh great. This boils down to "yeah, the Ghost rider will be in this episode". The only interesting part is the list of guest stars...glad that Yoyo is back.

Honestly, the marketing campaign for Ao S has been very sh... this time around. They really need to put a little bit more effort into it.

[up][up] It's the premiere. They basically have a synopsis for the entire season and then a one line synopsis for the episode. See the longer one here:

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." returns with a vengeance for the fourth exciting season in an all-new time period, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on the ABC Television Network. In the aftermath of their journey to another planet, Director Phil Coulson and the rest of the team were driven more than ever to put an end to the Hydra organization. Little did they know that they were up against the deadliest threat they've ever faced - an extremely powerful Inhuman, Hive, who was transported back from Maveth in the body of their worst enemy, Grant Ward. The team was able to thwart and kill Hive and take down Hydra, but they are all still mourning the death of fellow agent and Inhuman Lincoln Campbell.

In light of the Sokovia Accords, and with Hydra obliterated, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been legitimatized again and no longer needs to operate in the shadows. Since the world presumes that Coulson is dead, the organization needed a new Director to be the face of the organization. Coulson finds himself back in the role as an agent and teamed with Mack, and together they are tasked with tracking down and confirming the presence of Enhanced people, aka Inhumans. Agent May is tasked with training specialist strike teams, and Fitz and Simmons have taken a big step forward in their relationship.

In the season premiere episode, "The Ghost," Ghost Rider is coming, and S.H.I.E.L.D will never be the same.

In other news: yay, Yo-Yo is back! I'm really hoping that they make her a regular this season, because she is delightful.

For me, the biggest thing there was that Baby Groot doesn't have the original Groot's memories. sad

Humorous and informative, though maybe a smidgen strawmanny at points.

Eh, it's all dealing with an entirely imaginary/hypothetical questioner anyway, a little bit of strawmanning is probably actually necessary to some degree. And none of it meant particularly meanly as far as I can tell anyway.

First reviews for Luke Cage are in...looks like Marvel did it again. They praise especially the use of music and the villain.

Speaking of the music, what songs were used in the second trailer?

The review in question. I'm still a little confused about the setting, since I heard it was going to be before JJ, but the review says the main story takes place after.

I suspect it will just lean hard on flashbacks, same as JJ and DD.

It has always been described as being set after Jessica Jones. The plot wouldn't make any sense otherwise: Luke Cage, deciding to make a stand for his neighborhood. In Jessica Jones he's clearly something of a cynic isolationist, so this series would mean the season would have him lose all hope and become seclusive, leaving his own neighborhood to the sharks and departing for Hell's Kitchen. The trailers even show that his arc is precisely about learning to give a shit and stop being a reclusive guy with powers and start taking a stand. if the show were set before Jessica Jones, it'd need to essentially undo its own character arc to fit in canon.

I think the confusion stems from the fact it's apparently set after Jessica Jones but before the second season of Daredevil.

Oh OK. Must've been confused by the Daredevil S2 part, since I know they changed a scene with Claire Temple because of it.

The same will probably be true of Iron Fist. The idea was that everyone would get a first season, Defenders would happen, and then everyone would get a second season, etc.

Dare Devil getting his second season so fast screwed up the schedule.

Though that kind of explains why Daredevil's second season fizzles a bit toward the end. It's not really allowed to change the status quo for anything other than itself.

Also, the loose plot threads in Daredevil Season 2 will probably be picked up in Defenders considering it's going to be the same showrunners.

Apparently Luke Cage is set DURING Daredevil season 2...which has a confusing timeline anyway. I mean it starts with a heatwave and ends at Christmas in snowy weather with next to no time jumps inbetween. It the weather in New York really THAT fickle?

You know, that's actually a direct parallel to Phase 1 of the movies.

Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, Avengers.

Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Daredevil Season 2, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Defenders.

A superstrong person with an angsty, tragic past and anger issues, whom no-one really likes all that much, is hunted down by a man obsessed with them and their power, who stands no chance in hell against them in one-on-one combat, but is a threat regardless because of the people he can command. This person also fights a superstrong man who's not in their right mind, either because the man obsessed with them sent him after them, or because this man brought his receding mental state upon himself in a desperate play to become stronger.

Jessica Jones or Hulk?
