Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Vision is Marvel's version of Martian Manhunter in more ways than one, and that includes sticking with the team long after others leave and not really working as a solo character. Scarlet Witch can't really work on her own given that her brother is dead and her father is stuck in another continuity, trapped behind licensing rights.
Both of those characters currently have great solo titles, so I'd disagree with that they can't work alone. The Vision (2015) in particular is amazing and could really work as a psychological horror film.

Then I stand corrected. I need to get more current on these things.

Vision got a solo comic within the last year and it sorta illustrates my point; he had nothing resembling a supporting cast so they had to literally create him a family to work off.

Vision as a solo character is a very recent development in his like 40 plus year history (he'd had mini-series before but that's it. He was mostly an Avenger).

Usually when a character gets a solo comic, new supporting characters are created to use in that comic. Hell, Squirrel Girl got her own solo comic within the last year and they created a ton of supporting characters for her that are all awesome (like Chipmunk Hunk and Koi Boi). That doesn't mean the comic doesn't work — and, in fact, both Squirrel Girl's and Vision's comics do work very well, often considered some of the very best comics out there.

Can you replicate them in MCU form? Probably.

Okay, why did this turn into an argument? Nothing comicwriter said is incorrect or arguable.

I have the feeling that one of the reasons Marvel went for Got G was because they needed a cosmic property to introduce Thanos a little bit more and have infinity stones anywhere else but on earth, and Got G was the next best thing after everything which is tied up with the Fantastic Four.

I'm glad it worked out the way it did. I wouldn't trade the Guardians of the Galaxy we got for anything, and the MCU would have been very different if Galactus coming to Earth had happened in the same setting.

[up][up][up]Boredom I guess?

[up]Indeed. A major reason I was honestly never all that concerned about rights stuff is that not having access to their biggest characters forced Marvel to get creative.

The thing is, Marvel has a ton of characters and, as long as they don't mind using obscure properties (which Guardians of the Galaxy shows that they don't), they have so much they can use: Agents of Atlas, The Invaders, The Ultimates, Angela, Avengers Academy, Black Knight, Captain Britain and MI-13, Hellcat, Hercules, Thunderbolts, Dakota North, Darkhawk, Death's Head, Devil Dinosaur (with either Moon Boy or Moon Girl), Doctor Voodoo, the Eternals, Man-Thing, Hellstorm, the Hood, Ka-Zar, the Legion of Monsters, Nextwave, Squadron Supreme, Omega the Unknown, the Order, Power Pack, Red Wolf, Secret Avengers, She-Hulk, the Sentry, Skrull Kill Krew, Warlock, Weirdworld, Werewolf by Night, and Young Avengers.
I really want a Death's Head movie now. All this time, I wanted him to get a cameo in GOTG, but now that you mentioned it, I won't be satisfied until he gets a major starring role.

She-Hulk, at least, can't have a movie right now. In inclined to believe that if they could, they would have already (or, admittedly more likely, they would have created a Hulk sequel and introduced her as a sidekick a la Falcon or Rhodey).

I still think they should make a She-Hulk tv series.

Since they are using Hulk in Thor Ragnarok, they could still use She-Hulk in a non-Hulk related movie. I mean...I don't know what movie, but they could.

Alternatively, she could show up in The Defenders show. Because she's a defender. A public defender.

They could have her cameo on Daredevil as an Easter egg— in court, *before* her origin story— as a setup for a series.

Seriously, She-Hulk, Squirrel Girl, and Howard the Duck. Make it happen, Marvel. The crossover the city needs after NYC is presumably shredded by whatever happens in The Defenders.

So I was thinking about, parallels, or closed cycles, whatever you want to call it. I noticed some things:

1) We see Steve Rogers deliberately drop his shield twice in the MCU, and both times involved Bucky; in Winter Soldier he dropped it to show his refusal to fight Bucky, and in Civil War he dropped it to show he was done with being Captain America and everything it entailed; Bucky was more important.

2) It's been confirmed that Steve is no longer Captain America. That means, leaving out the USO nonsense, the first and last thing he did as Cap was saving Bucky Barnes.

3) Considering where they were in the end, it could be said that Captain America "died" in the same place the Winter Soldier was "born". That has to be symbolic of something; I just haven't quite worked out what it is yet.

Just some nighttime ramblings for you.

It also makes sense that Steve quit being Captain America at the end of Civil War — because it's the last of the Captain America trilogy. The trilogy started with him becoming Captain America and it ended with him quitting.

[up][up] The captain America trilogy is full of parallels like this. For example steve uses the line "I can do this all day" in the very first and the very last fight we see him in. Also, in The Winter Soldier Bucky jumps after Steve in order to pull him out of the Water, but in Civil War, Steve jumps after Bucky in order to pull him out.

Regarding new movies, if they ever make a Hulk sequel, I can totally see them introducing both She-Hulk and Amadeus Cho, and then make solo movies of them both (hopefully Cho and Hercules).

I would also like a Hawkeye movie where they introduce Kate Bishop as his succesor.

But honestly, Marvel has only obscure properties to use from now on, which can be both good and bad.

I'd be interested in a MCU Hercules movie.

In other news, our character pages are currently saying that War Machine & Ant-Man will be in Homecoming. Has that been confirmed?

They should probably be deleted unless we're talking cameos. The Comic Con footage supposedly has a scene where Peter watches news footage of War Machine fighting Giant-Man during Civil War, but that's literally it.

[up] Ant-Man was listed as a cameo, but War Machine wasn't. I've fixed it.

I'd prefer a Hercules series, to be honest. Just Herc dickin' around the nine realms, getting' drunk and goin' on adventures. Fucking women. Fucking dudes.

Huh. That actually looks pretty good. I mean, it looks homemade, but it's supposed to, so yeah. It looks fine.
