Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The network TV landscape has changed drastically anyway. These days it's very hard to get in stuff that doesn't fit a mold because younger audiences have increasingly gravitated towards either cable or streaming services, where creators are allowed to try something different.

For reference, Stranger Things has been a massive hit for Netflix. Every network passed on it. The Walking Dead was a huge hit for cable. When it was initially pitched to NBC, they wanted to make it a cop procedural.

ABC has a few good shows like How to Get Away With Murder but I'm really not sure they're the right place for superhero shows to begin with.

ABC does at least work as a softer landing spot for Marvel shows (than other networks, at least) by virtue of being owned by Disney, too. I don't really know much about their current lineup right now, but they do have a longtime reputation for family-friendly, safe, traditional content versus the rest of the Big Four. So yeah, bit of an odd fit for spy shows.

And the hell with the New Warriors, I want the Great Lakes Avengers.

Do you know how much I would watch a show that was just a slice-of-life sitcom starring the Avengers? It would be like an entire show of the party scene in Age of Ultron.

That was what prompted me to say that.

It's not a slam dunk, but I don't think most people necessarily deduced he would be a gym teacher before the sheet came out, so I'm inclined to believe it.

Yeah, I could watch the Avengers interacting with each other for hours, too. That is the one thing I fear for infinity war, that due to the need for action and the number of characters, there might not be many of those quiet moments.

I would also watch an Avengers sitcom. That sounds amazing.

I once saw someone suggest that, like with Disney movies nowadays, there be a short released with MCU movies, but the shorts should be about the Avengers or other MCU characters just hanging out/doing something mundane. I think that's a pretty cool idea. But I would definitely love an Avengers sitcom.

I miss the One-Shots. Maybe they figured it was too much work. The Thor and Darryl segment was kind of like one, though questionably canon whereas the One-Shots definitely were for the most part.

I don't care, Thor and Darrel is canon until proven otherwise.
