Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

You don't need to. It was literally what the people involved said happened. It was not, as the 4Chan leaker suggests, Marvel and Fox working together to tie Deadpool into the MCU.

"...he was asked to redesign the helicarrier so it looked as different as possible from the one in The Avengers. And it had to look like it had been taken apart in some places."

"No, it's clearly not the Helicarrier," Miller said with a smirk to Collider. "I just want to say for the record, there's a lot of groups in the Marvel universe who use flying combat platforms. It's not just the Helicarrier. A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) has some. It could have been anything but a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. Because that would be outside of the purview of the Fox/Marvel arrangement."

That shot of Bettany in the face trackers was adorable.

Alternate Captain America 3 plotline that could've been used if they weren't allowed to do Civil War.

I dunno, the civilians dilemma is kinda interesting but I feel like it would've still been too goofy to take seriously.

If they tied that into the experiments Howard Stark was doing in Agent Carter that might have worked.

First off, you should put that up in spoilers.

Secondly. What exactly is the problem here? "Odin takes the form of a lowly, beggar-ish human" is taken straight out of Norse Mythology

[up]I suppose the question is whether he does this in-movie by choice (which fits Norse mythology) or had it forced on him by someone else, which would mean things were quite dire indeed.

If this leads to Sam picking up the shield, I would not be displeased.

What exactly is the problem here?

I'm just not a fan of the MCU's humor and even if it is out of the mythology, this just feels like it's going to be a long and dumb joke in the movie.

The movie isn't even out yet. Don't judge until it's out and we see the result.

Anthony Hopkins joking around on set while filming doesn't exactly mean that anything to do with Odin in Thor Ragnarok will necessarily be one big joke.

I'm surprised Hopkins came back.

Me too, honestly. Maybe Marvel actually realizing that the Thor franchise being somewhat lackluster compared to everything else in the MCU and resolving to change in Thor Ragnarok that convinced him to come back.

[up][up]

Hopkins was most likely signed on for three movies from the getgo like most of them. His loss in interest probably had more to do with the immense amounts of Executive Meddling for Dark World. Now that Ragnarok is under tighter production with a director who seems to know what he's doing and is happy to be there Hopkins likely sees it as less of an obligation like Weaving did.

I'm pretty sure Odin will die in this one anyway.

He psuedo-not-really died in the comic Simonson Surtr story. I'm unsure how much the movie is going to be based on that considering how much other stuff seems to be going on.

Anthony Hopkins is pretty old and him being able to play the same character through 3 movies is quite an achievement. If Hopkins were to die soon it would be a little awkward to explain Odin's death in future movies.

That's assuming there would be future Thor movies for him to appear in. Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor each having a trilogy of movies, and only appearing in teamups after that point, wouldn't be the worst idea.
