Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I mean, flying around the Earth backwards also wouldn't let you travel through time, either. So I say this is pretty par for the course.

Presumably that's what the writers thought they were doing.

There's a difference between sealing the faultlines and erasing them from existence, turning Earth into a tectonically inert planet like Mars.

If the faultlines are left alone, then Pacific Rim can still happen. Worth it.

IIRC, Phoenix!Cyclops sealed the fault lines, rather than erase them, I think with Phoenix fire powers. This was pointed as a ridiculous idea in comic though.

Why exactly did we end up at fault lines? There is so much else to discuss like...mmm...it's a slow newsweek, isn't it?

What are the odds that this is real? Some of it seems plausible IMO, but I'm not buying it just yet (massive spoiler warning).

A lot of this could be just guesswork...or is actually stuff which is already confirmed.

The movie takes place simultaneously to the MCU, with Stephen Strange's accident happening shortly after Tony Stark returns from Afghanistan and his training spanning all the other movies

That's a good idea, and it would explain a lot.

The comments on that post also contain potential spoilers about future Phase 3 films, plans for Phase 4, potential negotiations with Fox, etc.

I seem to recall someone (Feige?) saying that Strange wasn't practicing magic when he was first mentioned in Winter Soldier.

Of course, it's possible they changed their minds. Then again, it might have merely been that he wasn't known to be anything other than a surgeon at the time.

Yeah, all of this seems like guesswork and stuff that has already been confirmed (or not confirmed, in the case of Zendaya being MJ).

But here's another thing to consider: even if these leaks are real, there is a good chance everything about them could change. Apparently, there were leaks for Age of Ultron about Loki's involvement in the movie and how they said that Loki controlled Ultron — which was a misconception the audience had and the reason Loki's dream sequence was cut from the film.

Most of the things leaked are from movies that don't even have final scripts yet, so again, even if the leaks were real, odds are that most of the things they said are going to change due to different drafts, directors wanting to do something else, or just things being different.

Aaaand the stuff in the 4chan is probably completely false and only speculation, because we already have confirmed that some of it is wrong. It says that the end of GOTG 2 "leads directly to Avengers: Infinity War" but we already know that GOTG 2 takes place only a few months after the first GOTG, therefore still in 2014. In fact, Gunn himself said he didn't know if the Guardians would be in Infinity War, which would be an odd thing to say if the end of his film led directly into it.

I think it should be a rule of thumb to not trust 4Chan leaks until proven otherwise by the official release.

Also the big thing that causes this to fall apart is actually small. They say Marvel and Fox have improved relations and there will be an FF reboot in the MCU, with the evidence being that Marvel allowed Fox to use the Helicarrier in Deadpool.

Word of God from the people who actually made Deadpool is that it was a Lawyer-Friendly Cameo, which was why they never called it a Helicarrier onscreen and why they requested that the concept artist not make it look like the ones from Winter Soldier or The Avengers.
