Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

"So I'm guessing nobody cares about MJ Watson then? Okay."

Actually I do.

When I ask you "when" will Hollywood's incessant prejudice against gingers end?!?

The apparent lack of red hair is something of a point of concern for me, I'll grant you that. Her most striking visual characteristic, gone? I'm all for casting a non-white actress in the role, but some things are just a bridge too far.

I'm only half-serious, really.

Hair dye is a thing that exists.

Yeah, I know. I'm just a stodgy traditionalist sometimes. Pay me no heed.

I'm not ready to fully celebrate the casting until we have official confirmation, because it could still be just misreported at this point. Remember, this project has a precedent for misreported casting decisions.

At the same time, according to some of the rumors, they intended this to be a sort of twist reveal ("whoah, she's Mary Jane!"), so if that's true then there's good reason for them to be trying to keep the casting on the down-lo - they were trying to preserve the twist.

Assuming it's true, then it is kind of hilarious how many originally white red-haired characters are getting Race Lifted. It's obviously a positive thing, but the weirdly specific trend is still funny. Reminds me of a satirical post the Nerds of Color wrote on the pattern, quite a while back.

[up] I'm more weirded out at how most of these white red heads who turned black don't keep their red hair.

Seriously, you can work red head on black people; its not too far fetched for a thought, especially in works of fiction.

Well, at least in the case of James Olsen, he has a shaved head now, so as far all we know he would have red hair if he had any hair at all.

But there really are a fair number of black people with red hair, and that's not even counting how many people dye their hair for the sake of fashion. I suppose red hair isn't exactly what you would call a defining personality trait, so they figure if they're already doing a Race Lift, hair color isn't really worth going out of their way to preserve.

For some reason, black guys dying their hair orange was a huge fad at the school I used to go to.

Inspired by Dennis Rodman maybe?

I was thinking Wesley Snipe but yeah most likely Dennis Rodman.

Moral of the story is, she could easily still have red or reddish hair even after the Race Lift. And even if she doesn't, it wouldn't be a big deal.

It's henna hair dye, probably. I've heard it's pretty popular among some African people (particularly old dudes with grey hair) to dye their hair orange, might have gotten transferred over to African Americans.

There's also this tribe called the Mundari who use cow piss to dye their hair orange. Yes, really.

I read the article, and I'm skeptical - mainly because the article doesn't give us any back-up to believe the connection, and more suspiciously tries to justify that lack of information by implying that Mary Jane's identity could be a mystery in universe (like, they say the script has her character "drop hints" at her identity - and don't tell us what those hints are - as apposed to simply have her be MJ in it, and posits she could be using a pseudonym like TDKR's Talia Al Ghul).

It's another one of those "build an article on no actual information" deals. Even if it actually turns out to be true in the future, the article doesn't give much reason to consider it right now.

The fact that it comes from El Mayimbe makes me more likely to believe that MJ may not be in this movie at all and he's only mentioning her name to bullshit his way into more clicks. Like El Mayimbe does. At any rate if it does turn out to be true, I can at least hope that even with her sparse fimography Zendaya will probably do a better job than Kirsten Dunst.

It'll be a shame if it does turn out that the story is bogus, because a lot of people will have gotten their hopes up for nothing.note

i feel like the main problem with the raimi films wasn't really dunst, moreso the way the role was written. it's not like superhero films have a rich history of well-written love interests, most of them are written as accessories to the main character.

El Mayimbe already has a bad reputation so I imagine not that many people will care yet. I'm more worried that Tumblr will overhype this to shit because they are extremely bad about factchecking and falling for flagrant hoaxes that fit with their confirmation bias.

Anyway I wouldn't concern myself too much with what "nerdbros" think. The thing about the alt-right is they love nothing more than the sound of their own voices, so it's basically giving them attention and legitimacy they don't deserve.

Actually, from what I've seen this story is circulating far and wide. Pretty much every geek news outlet I follow has been repeating it (all of them only citing The Wrap), and there's already armies of people fighting on Twitter over the very idea of MJ not being white.

So it's definitely out there, and it's making a stir. Which is why I say it's going to be a shame if it all turns out to be a load of BS - a lot of people, PoC comic fans especially, are getting their hopes up.

As it stands, I find the idea itself to be perfectly plausible, but I'm still not counting my chickens until we have official confirmation.

And I couldn't care less what they think, I just like to make fun of them now and then.

Speaking of Homecoming, here's the casting list. Looks like the rumor that Shocker would be Bokeem Woodbine has been confirmed.

And Choi is listed as "Principal Morita". Guess it is a case of Identical Grandson like a lot of people predicted. Also Barbieri's character is named Jason so hopefully that'll finally put the rumors about him literally playing Ganke to rest. And the fact that there is a Ms. Warren there means she could potentially be the wife of Miles Warren, a character people have speculated Donald Glover could be playing.
