Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I would answer you, but in the middle of trying to identify each actor and actress, I happened to notice the dress in the bottom-right corner and am now having trouble forming coherent thoughts.

Also, it's easy to miss, but an NSFW-warning would be advisable due to that dress.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

Left-to-right: Chiwetel Ejiofor (Mordo), Jessica Chastain (she was almost Maya Hansen, does that count?), Idris Elba (Heimdall), George Clooney (no), Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm, Killmonger), Jared Leto (Joker), Lupita Nyong'o (Nakia), Naomie Harris (nope), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Léa Seydoux (nada).

wild mass guessIt's only a matter of time for those remaining four so start fancasting.

Oh damn, George Clooney in a Marvel film. Who should he play?

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

He replaces RDJ as Iron Man.

Seriously, if I would've cast Clooney as anyone it would've been Justin Hammer.

Nobody....I always considered him a highly overrated actor, plus, he already had his shot in a superhero movie and we all know how that ended (and no, this is not like Chris Evans as Johnny Storm, considering that his performance was one of the few good things in this sh... movie).

What if Clooney played Norman Osborne?

It's the same problem he had with Batman. He's a great Bruce Wayne, and so would play a great Roderick Kingsley or maybe Norman Osborn (I would definitely pick Kingsley for him, though), but not a great Hobgoblin or Green Goblin.

Well then have him play someone suave and sophisticated who isn't a villain, but not someone with powers.

Or just stick him into DC. Throw them a bone.

He'd be good in a non-action role, at least.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!

He'd have been sort of perfect for the old version of Nick Fury, actually. He'd have also made a good Purple Man if they'd went with his comics version where he'd already been working as a spy *before* he got his powers.

He's brought a lot to the table playing characters who only *think* they're cool in the past as well. I can totally picture his voice coming from the inside of Mysterio's bubble, for instance.

The obvious role is Nighthawk.

Left-to-right: Chiwetel Ejiofor (Mordo), Jessica Chastain (she was almost Maya Hansen, does that count?), Idris Elba (Heimdall), George Clooney (no), Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm, Killmonger), Jared Leto (Joker), Lupita Nyong'o (Nakia), Naomie Harris (nope), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Lea Seydoux (nada).

Ironically Seydoux was heavily rumored for the Gambit movie, though I think she later said the rumors were false.

[up][up][up] I could see that. Him as a classic Pierce Brosnan-esque spy, a gentleman thief, or a corrupt corporate executive (or, if not a villain, the rare good-aligned corporate executive) would work well.

But I get the feeling the MCU is done introducing new spy characters for a while, unless they're also supervillains. Clooney as Chameleon would be interesting, but I generally dislike it when a character who is supposed to have many faces is instead mostly portrayed by one big name star.

Though I think he would probably better fit an enemy for Ant-Man than Spider-Man.

Clooney: M.O.D.O.K. [lol]? Harris: Monica Rambeau? Chastain: Lea in a Doctor Strange sequel, she can give Cumberbatch a run for his money; Seydoux: Hmm, hard one. Maybe Phyla-Veil? (yes, I only know her from Blue Is the Warmest Color, sue me)

So I'm guessing nobody cares about MJ Watson then? Okay.

Yeah, if I remember The Wrap is not great as far as sources go.

On an entirely unrelated note to the Clooney discussion, do you guys think The Hood would make a good villain in a Spider-Man movie, or even as a character in a movie of his own?

[up][up][up] It's less uncaring and more that the appearance of either her, Gwen or (to a lesser extent) Betty was pretty expected, if true. I also expect one of the casted classmates to be Liz.

[up] But no one's excited to know who's playing her (assuming it's true)?

Variety and Hollywood Reporter are the best. Joblo has also basically proven over the course of the last few movies that they have a genuine insider at Marvel to provide them with information. Deadline is good for breaking news but may be guilty of jumping the gun as a result. Comic Book News and Heroic Hollywood are really unreliable.

Edit: Just realized that MJ article is written by Umberto Gonzalez aka El Mayimbe who is notorious for pulling shit out of his ass and the main reason Heroic Hollywood is not reliable, including that time he claimed Iron Man was going to be in the first GOTG. So yeah, gonna wait until we have a proper source for this..
