Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Does it? I actually feel that the spandex looks limits the options and makes all heroes who wear that stuff look kind of samey. For example I feel that the costume Scarlet Witch had in Civil War has way more character than the boring red suit with the ridiculous headdress.
(I suspect that drawing the spandex look is simply easier than dealing with a lot of fabric).

Eh. Drawing accurate anatomy is way more work than fudging clothing drapery, because people know and care what human beings look like. Skintight costumes are there for Author Appeal. They went on being popular for the same reasons that pro wrestling or football or gladiatorial bloodsport have always been popular, ie. yeah, it's a power fantasy for most, and probably a fetish for many.
Of course porn being more readily available than ever and societal roles not being quite so hidebound as of late, the medium is changing.
It allows freedom in that you can invent any material you want and design the look with little regard to logic or common sense. A material you design can have any properties you want often outright ignoring the laws of physics. I admit that it leads to power and/or sex appeal designs more often than not but there you go.
I personally wasn't a fan of Cap's outfit in The Avengers. The colors were a little bright for my tastes, and it wound up looking a bit garish in live action. His outfits in subsequent movies have been fine, though.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Not just me, then. Good. I get that they were going for a very deliberately comic-booky look, but when you put him next to the other Avengers with their more down-to-earth costumes, he wound up looking slightly ridiculous.
I actually like Thor's look quite a bit. He could easily have suffered in the jump to live action, but between the flowing red cape, the chain mail arms, and Chris Hemsworth, they pulled it off impressively.
And then there's Black Panther, of course.

I feel like there's ways it could have worked. If it was a little more structured, if it was darker. The film's already pretty saturated, so if they could have gotten a little highlight/shadow contrast, that could have helped it. Looking at the concept art the overall design is pretty cool, but it just wasn't put together as well as it could have been. Also all the concept art seems to put it under shadows, whereas in the movie itself it was highly lit all the time. I get the feeling that the the costume was approved under dimmer, more naturalistic light, but it does look garish on film. The costume in Civil War is similar, but fixes those exact flaws.
The WWII costume is just so good, though. Any excuse to get closer to that again is fine by me.

Thor's costumes are pretty much the baseline for costume quality when it comes to the MCU. Which is honestly a pretty high one. And his compadres' are even better. Say what you will about Loki's other attributes but at the least he's walking Costume Porn.
I really dislike the Black Widow costume in Age of Ultron. I know that it is hard to change her look to something new, but the blue stripes just look silly, and don't really fit the idea of a sneaky spy.
Otherwise I am really laid back when it comes to costumes. Cap's costume in The Avengers is my least favourite because it looks the least realistic, but then, this is kind of the point. After all, Coulson designed it. It is supposed to look a little bit ridiculous.
...I didn't notice she was wearing heels before.
Goddammit, Marvel.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I think the blue stripes fit her Widow Bite.
As for Cap's WW 2 suit, I love the "soldier" look and how they incorporate the red stripes, but the gray stripes make his shoulders look overly broad.
Cap's Avengers suit: should've kept the helmet and chinstrap. The gray armpits are weird.
Cap's SHIELD suit. Pretty cool, but the lack of red makes his shield look out of place. Cap's WW 2 suit in the second movie has that odd middle stripe which I don't like.
Cap's Ultron and Civil War suits: Fine balance of colors, but I don't like the stripes' shape.

Non Indicative UsernameYeah Black Widow's status as "sneaky spy" when she joined the Avengers and then publically testified in front of Congress after SHIELD fell.
And she's had wedges for all of her appearances actually (because Scarlett is not a tall woman, so the wedges add a few inches on her height at least). The various movies just take care to shoot her in ways that mask her wedges most of the time. For example, I wouldn't have known that she had them in The Avengers if I hadn't have stumbled onto a BTS still photo of her in-costume.

Yeah for Captain Marvel she doesn't need protection or armor, she just needs something that she could wear without getting ripped.
"Unstable molecules" I guess.
