Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Also Steve wasn't wearing his actual COSTUME there. He was in civilian garb, which changes things. Thor, Cap, Star Lord, etc get shirtless scenes fair enough, but their actual costumes cover them up (well one of Thor's costumes shows off his arms, but that's not bad really). Deadpool got lots of sexual elements to him, but his actual costume covers him from head to toe. Ditto on Bale and Keaton, and Affleck getting shirtless scenes as Batman, and so on.
Which is why I make the distinction with Carol. You want a token scene or two like that with her, fine. I can deal with it as long as it's done tastefully. Turnabout is fair play I guess. But, her costume needs to make her look like the powerful, military woman that she is. Which is why her current one (aside from looking cool in-general imo), works so well. She looks like both a military person and a superhero.

...Didn't this whole conversation get started because someone suggested using the old costume as an actual swimsuit while having her superhero costume based on her Captain Marvel design? If they do that they could just have it randomly in her closet as a nod to the old design, she wouldn't even have to wear it.
To me the mere fact they chose to call the movie Captain Marvel means it can be safely assumed that her costume will be based on the modern Captain Marvel design. In fact I would be astounded if it wasn't.
What about that old woman that Carol hung around with? She was fun.
Also, Chewbacca.

I think the original comparison was that Steve is wearing a very tight shirt in that scene and Evans gets to mightily strain his muscles, which viewers so inclined were surely supposed to notice. There is fan service here, but not at the expense of what it means what he's actually doing there, emotionally and from a character POV.
Nonetheless you are right of course, keeping the bathing suit and thigh-high boots Carol's uniform instead of sexy civilian attire is different and would take this into a territory where you wonder what kind of military she's working for. Which is what I wanted to indicate with my "if Steve had been wearing a costume like that in that scene" comparison.

I personally prefer the current Carol costume what with the red and the blue and the starburst and the gloves and the helmet mohawk is fine although I like the cockatoo hair better.
If that is her costume, I do wonder how Kamala will get the lightning bolt if she is ever MCU'd.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI kinda like the first and the last one myself.
As much as I like her current look (and even if I still like her two previous ones, especially the EMH version of her first costume) I kinda wish they'd gone with one of these looks instead.
One Strip! One Strip!Regarding the difference between objectification and empowerment, this is what objectification looks like when applied to a male character.

And we all know how popular this was with the male audience.....
Mmm....I actually like neither option, mostly because I object to the idea of what is basically a tight-fitting second skin with some colours splashed on in. For the movies, I would like her to be in something which looks like an actual uniform, with a proper uniform jacked over proper pants.
@ Carol: A. Good.
B. Good.
C. Decent but the focus of the pattern that emphasize the boobs is a little weird.
D. Like the idea but the execution leave something to be desired. The bellybutton and the crotch cut is a little ugly and distracting.
E. Favorite. I feel like the people who design Kamala costume recycle this design with different color.

A. Not a fan. A bit too armor-y. Which I typically don't mind, but the segmented abs don't really work for me, and the whole thing's a bit bland to the eye.
B. Too Storm-esque (and also a bit too Asgard-esque). The scarf doesn't quite seem fitting for the character, and neither do the bare arms. And I find the gauntlets and boots a tad distracting.
C. Much better, pretty good look. I don't love the blue strips on the hips - I think it would look better without them - but still a fairly solid design.
D. Almost too much going on. Weird color cuts around the pelvis and knees, and once again I'm not a fan of the blue elements.
E. Now we're talkin'. Definitely my favorite of the lot. Very simple and straightforward, but I actually like that in a costume.
Although I may actually prefer her current Captain Marvel costume to any of these, to be honest.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."A. Too dark. B Way too much blue. C. Feels a little off but not too bad. D. My favorite. E. Good, but it needs more detailing. Just a bit too minimalistic.
Personally, I think they should just adapt the A:EMH suit or or the current one (but with long hair).
Yeah, so if I could just find happiness, that'd be great.A cosmic character usually has different costume needs than a fighter might need and is generally far more durable than most types of armor which may interfere with energy and matter manipulation abilities.
Most Marvel 'spandex' costumes are made of a fictional material referred to as 'unstable molecules'. In the end, this allows for more freedom in regards to costumes for characters of this type.

I expect them to put Carol in some sort of military uniform which has kind of the patterns of her usual costume, but not quite as bright in colour, just like Caps costume is usually toned down a bit. There is no sense in being a walking target. Well, unless you are Iron Man and simply don't care.
I think the way males and females are portrayed in traditional comic books (hey, they have learned a little bit with time) are best described this way: Male: You want to be that. Female: You want to bone that.
