Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Geesh, Carol's costume can be said as a swimsuit to a bystander and it would be hard to disprove.
Although I still think the film should keep Mar-Vell even though how much Demoted to Extra he is because I feel like that is the few important characters in Carol's history that she has who isn't named Kamala or Jessica Drew, who both sure as hell won't be introduced or play significant role in Carol's first movie.
I totally get why they would want to change her origin story here. She's the first female lead character, they've been criticized for taking so freaking long to make a movie with a female (and minority) lead, and they're pushing her as their #1 female character, etc. So it likely make little sense from their perspective to then go "but she gets her powers, her codename, her costume, and her inspiration, all from a male character in an origin story where she's pretty passive and has little agency of her own." And as someone who is far more interesting in Carol than Mar-veil, I have no problem with them going a different route. SW and QS's origins are very different in the MCU, as is Vision's, and yet both have worked out fine imo.
As for her costume, I expect them to go with a version of her current one in the comics. They've made a point of calling her "Captain Marvel" in the film, not "Ms. Marvel" and that's her CM costume, it's the one that newer fans are familiar with, the MCU tends to try and "practicalize" it's costumes while still homaging the comics, they likely don't want to bad press of having all of these fairly practically clothed (for comics anyway) heroes, with her then standing with them in a glorified one-piece swimsuit and thigh-high boots, etc.
But, I wouldn't mind them homaging the "black lightning bolt suit" in some way. They like to have Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Pratt, and Paul Rudd, and (judging by the trailer) Benedict Cumberbatch take their shirts off for no real reason other than fanservice for the audience (also Chris Evans repeatedly wearing suspiciously tight-fitting T-shirts as well). So maybe there's a scene of her by a pool, or at the beach, and her swimsuit looks like the black lightning bolt costume, or something along those lines?

While I would like the idea of having one of Carol's "swimsuit" costumes put in a cameo appearance as an actual swimsuit if it existed in a vacuum, I'm not sure it's a good idea for Marvel's first leading lady to have a swimsuit scene in her premiere film.
Mainly because I know Hollywood. You know that scene would be loaded with Male Gaze Fanservice, and after the amount of criticism Marvel's received for taking so long to get to a female protagonist, including a scene in which the camera lovingly caresses her curves is basically the worst thing they can possibly do.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Having it suggested and rejected like the Crystal costume in Jessica Jones would be a better way to include it. Anything that keeps her from actually wearing it in her premiere movie.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I depends on how it's done really. Look I complain about the double-standards when it comes to sexualization of male vs female characters in comics A LOT!! It's blatant and really irritating. But, a little bit of "fanservice" isn't automatically a problem, depending on how you show it.
Her being in a swimsuit doesn't have to be gratuitous. If it's shot correctly, if the camera doesn't constantly "linger," if it's not constantly happening in the movie (her sexuality being a huge part of it that is), etc, then I think that it could be ok. I mentioned those other examples because those are cases of "fanservice done right," and they tend to be pretty quick scenes.
The "suggestion montage" could work. My only issue there is, it's already been done in both Jessica Jones and Supergirl. And while both of them worked imo, it's kind of becoming predictable. If they're going to do it, then I'd like them to be more creative than that personally.

Yeah, I'm all for cutting down on objectification, but equal-opportunity fanservice can stay. And the gazey aspects of it are generally what differentiates objectifying fanservice from the more empowering kinds of fanservice.
Having Kamala Khan in Carol's movie would make for a good backdoor to her getting her own powers, especially in the increasing likelihood of the Inhumans remaining absent from the movies. Also Jessica Drew and Monica Rambeau, as well as Rhodey if they do go ahead with that romance (not something I personally liked, but a lot of people do, so oh well).

I'm reminded of the scene in the last Mission Impossible film where Rebecca Ferguson wears a bikini. Yet it works ok because it's a short scene, they constantly emphasize how awesome she is throughout the film, there's a context for it, and it's not particular "gazey." Even the most seemingly gratuitous shot of it that was in the trailers, isn't actually in the film itself.
So for example, if the scene is framed as Carol talking to someone (be it Jessica or whomever). And you can see well-enough that the suit is clearly homaging her "iconic" costume from the comics, but otherwise the camera doesn't excessively linger on it and the crux of the scene is her having this conversation, than it could work.
It's been done before on-film, so it's not completely impossible. You just need to be careful that's all.
As for her supporting cast, I'd like to see Rhodey appear. Now he likely wouldn't be a love interest here given the big age-gap between Brie Larson and Don Cheadle, but he doesn't have to be imo. He could simply be her friend, Air Force colleague, etc.

A supporting cast is fine. It's introducing another Avenger whose origins and powers have nothing to do with hers (thus requiring screentime to set up and explain) that I think would be more of an issue.
Ideally if Jessica Drew were in the movie, I'd do what someone suggested up thread and have her not get powers or a costumed identity until the sequel.
Marvel has tweaked to many origin stories already and nobody even noticed. Scott originally broke in to steal the Ant-man suit under very different circumstances, Peter Quill used to be quite a dick and not this poor, traumatized little boy who got abducted by Ravagers aso. And honestly, the original origin story of Captain Marvel is more on the boring side.
I wouldn't mind seeing her in a leotard at the pool as long as the rest of the Avengers are around, too, to show off their assets. I have nothing against a little bit fanservice as long as it is equal-opportunity fanservice. I would certainly like this better than someone holding up a ridiculous costume for her to roll her eyes. The joke has gotten old.
Well they already do it constantly with the Three Chris's. And Paul Rudd, and Bautista spends pretty much all of GOTG walking around shirtless, and Bene Khan Cumber Strange is apparently going shirtless in the movie as well judging by the SDCC trailer.
Tracey Burke would be another cool Carol supporting cast member to see in the film as well.
Generally, the ways men and women are sexualized in media are completely different. Namor in a speedo or Hulk shirtless is meant to make them look powerful, not fuckable. Ms. Marvel's costumes were usually designed that way because of Fanservice (Stan Lee explicitly admits that he wanted "tits and ass" with Carol).
I assume that even with the change of origin, Captain Mar-Vell or other Kree characters would still be part of her supporting cast as well.
Given the possible emphasis on Carol's military niche, I'd love to see Kamala as an impulsive and enthusiastic buck private who's green and quirky but whom Carol nevertheless forms a close friendship with after getting her powers. Though the way I see that going is similar to what they already did with Falcon, I suppose.
