Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

The magic in Doctor Strange will just be magic, Scott Derrickson says.
Not sure how many of you care, I personally don't, but I know a lot of people have expressed issues elsewhere that the MCU was pushing too hard to come up with scientific or technological explanations for magic in the films.
@Adric- Well, for this show, we'll have to count the black people who aren't criminals (great trailer and very hyped but have to admit that crossed my mind)
RE Doctor Strange, reminded me of something. So I recall when Agent Carter's second season was going on there was an indication that the Darkforce (forget what they called it) would have some connection to the magic in Doctor Strange. Nothing in the Strange trailers so far suggests that, and I'd rather it didn't. Because as much as I love Agent Carter (#SAVEAGENTCARTER), the second season presented the Darkforce in a way that awkwardly went from Raygun Gothic science to sort of Lovecraftian magic in a way that I thought didn't serve either well.
Hmm. Well, it seems like the show will be a prequel to anything in Jessica Jones. Not sure though whether it will be before or after Cage married. I'd guess afterward though.

So it occurs to me:
Luke is certainly not the most broken character in marvel, but considering he's dealing with street level Mooks it seems hard to believe anyone is gonna provide a challenge to him (physically at least, because there are other ways to fight Luke that don't need a person to throw a punch, and he can't hit everything).
I mean, Matt is fighting city wide corruption and and a mystical Ninja Conspiracy, and Jessica took on someone who, for most of the story couldn't be beaten with strength because it was too dangerous to get within earshot of him (though Jessica turned out to be immune, but she didn't know that for most of the story).
Luke is operating on a much lower scale, and has the raw brute strength and durability to basically make anyone and everyone stupid enough to go up against him his bitch.
One Strip! One Strip!I vaguely got the feeling from a clip toward the end of the trailer (as well as general Genre Savvy about how comic books work) that Cottonmouth will probably get a power-up that puts him on an equal/superior physical footing.
But yeah, I don't get the sense of Luke having physical challenges. It's more like avoiding his loved ones/neighborhood being harmed and/or getting arrested.
I don't think it will be a prequel because of Claire. As far as I remember, she didn't know Luke in JJ, but she interacts with him in the trailer like she does.
He was put in a serious medical condition in Jessica Jones by having a shotgun fired point blank under his chin.
Meanwhile, he walks out of explosions just fine.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI didn't really get the impression that it was a prequel, but it would make sense for there to be flashbacks— Daredevil and Jessica Jones both make frequent use of flashbacks. Could also start before Jessica Jones and then Time Skip to afterwards later in the series, or even cut back and forth as a regular thing per episode.
Hmm. You might be right. I was assuming flashback based on the assumption that this was set shortly after he received his powers. Come to think of it though it would make sense that it was after Jessica Jones- not just because of Claire but because in that show, Luke has no interest/involvement in heroism. It could be (as I was assuming) that he was involved in heroism but things went south and he went into bar-tending/keeping his nose down, but it would be less pessimistic if post-Jessica Jones he went into heroing.
This has probably come up in the thread before, but does IGH have a comic book equivalent? They're tied to Jessica and Simpson's origins, at the very least. What about Matt and Luke's? I'm wondering if this is the thread that ties it all together, like maybe they're a subsidiary of the Rand Corporation or something.
Well, the uniting thread other than Claire Temple, I mean.

Yeah hopefully Waikiti seems to have it fairly under control compared to the written-by-committee mess that was The Dark World. I'm fine with him being in the film, I just don't want him to consume it or for it to be Hijacked by Ganon.

Simpson's origins in the comic are much different — he's actually a product of the Weapon Plus project, more accurately, he's Weapon VII, another attempt at creating the Super Soldier Serum. He has that in common with Luke Cage, who got his powers from another attempt to recreate the Super Soldier Serum, this time using prisoners at Seagate Prison.
Matt got his powers (and was blinded) by a toxic waste spill, similar to Jessica. And Danny Rand got his powers from hugging a dragon until it went to sleep.

Shame Cottonmouth isn't dressed like a leprechaun, though.
Still, that trailer is amazing! And it looks like Claire will have a pretty big role if her presence in the trailer is anything to go by. Really looking forward to this.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
