Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up] It will be interesting to see if Wong features more heavily in the trailer for the Chinese market.

[up]They don't actually reveal anything I couldn't have guessed myself. But I like that the writers are actually digging deep into the comic book lore for more obscure characters to use. Who knows what kind of gem they discover this way.

I heard that Edgar Wright wanted Wong to be in Ant-Man, but then they also wanted to use him in Doctor Strange, too, so Wright was left out. And you know what they say: two Wongs don't make a Wright.

[up][up] You never know. Strange-r speculation has been W-right, while the more likely ones are wong.

I regret nothing.

[up] Mention Wright keep pissing me off about his original treatment of Janet. He put her on the fringe and then ended up killing her off anyway. just bugs me

By the way, it just occurred me that Doc Strange's soundtrack is being done by Michael Giacchino, who always fills his scores with glorious, magnificent puns (for instance, his Mission Impossible 3 score had a track named "Disguise The Limit", his Star Trek Beyond one had "A Swarm Welcome").

I wonder what wordplay he'll have for Doc Strange? "Something's Wong" , "Getting Away With Mordo", "Western Medicine", the possibilities are endless

"All you Fascists bound to lose."

Lol, I would love Getting away with Mordo.

I guess technically something is Wong, even if we usually refer to people as "someone".

Feige talks a little about Dr. Strange, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther.

The stuff about Dr. Strange's use of 3D is interesting. Gimmicky as all hell, but if they pull it off it could be amazing, since Marvel's previous forays into 3D have been rather underwhelming.

[up]Heh, that sig. i over 8.

They'll announce who is directing Captain Marvel by the end of the Summer. Should be close. Summer isn't much longer.

Hopefully it'll be in time so that they can make suggestions regarding Infinity War like Coogler got to for Civil War.

I love Spider-Man, but I wouldn't want them to make it an annual thing if there's going to be more than a trilogy.

The third Avengers movie is now just Avengers: Infinity War, no Part 1. The fourth movie will continue the arc but will be subtitled something else.

We didn't. They said they were retitling it but not what they were retitling it to.

Chances are the second film will be called Infinity Gauntlet then, as some people theorized. Though I figure it would've made more sense the other way around. Start with the Infinity Gauntlet, follow it up with Infinity War.

Yeah, that was the most likely one I was thinking of. But maybe they want to start it off with a bang and Infinity War sounds bigger for that.

I don't know, I think the Russo brothers said that both films would be quite different. So the Thanos storyline might wrap up in Infinity War and the next film might start a new arc. So perhaps Infinity War and Secret Wars? That could be interesting.

After years and years of going "Thanos is coming, y'all!!!", it would be disappointing as hell if Thanos' arc is resolved in one film.

Marvel would be solidifying the fact that they have a villain problem.

I have to disagree with the use of 3D in Doctor Strange being a gimmick, quite the opposite in fact. What bothers me about most 3D movies is that the 3D doesn't add anything to the experience. There are precious few for which is actually makes sense (ie Pina is a movie I can't imagine in anything but 3D). So if they say that they have to think about converting the movie to 2D instead of the other way around it gives me faith that in this case, there will be a point to all the 3D.
