Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I rather give Marvel credit for what they have already done - turning Black Widow into a valuable character, having with Jessica Jones and Peggy Carter two female lead TV shows, having with Ao S what I consider so far the most diverse Comic book show on TV, introducing a badass Black Panther and a very likable Falcon - than praising WB for what they might or might not do will. Especially since a Wonder Woman movie was due at least 20 years ago. It is not like they didn't do female lead Comic book movies before and they all sucked!!!!!
Yeah. I was more impressed that they managed to turn Black Widow and Scarlet Witch - two characters that I always have problems finding them relatable, interesting or atleast well-rounded in the comics into all of the above. And Peggy Carter into an actual characters. DC has Wonder Woman and they didn't even bother to do something interesting with her as a solo character until recently.
But everything I mentioned about what WB's doing diversity-wise is going to happen. The only change I can see happening is if Wan or Famuyiwa decide to bail, which at this point is unlikely.
And I'm not gonna pin the decades-long delay on a Wonder Woman movie on WB's head alone. The whole "female superheroes can't sell" bullshit is something that permeates all of Hollywood, something that they're finally doing something about.
I applaud DC/WB for slowly going for more diversity - I've seen too much of the fighting for same in comics over the last 20 years not to feel they are still going at a snail's pace - but I'm still not interested in watching their movies. I've commonly preferred Marvel's offerings when it comes to mainstream comics and now superhero movies, and despite all the issues, I don't see that changing quickly.
ETA: the opposite of what I wanted to say, grumpf. Basically, mainstream comics seem so conservative to me sometimes, I'm surprised they got this far.

If Justice League turns out to be really good, I'll probably go see it. I'll also probably go see Wonder Woman in a show of support of female superhero movies, unless it's...well, bad.
Other than that, my interest has been somewhat piqued, but I think I still need some convincing.

Because so far every since Warner Bros DC movie has been sexist. No exception. For all their attempts to make Lois Lane relevant, she has been a terrible written character so far and is still only there to be rescued by Superman. It looks like Wonder Woman is in good hands, since they do and say all the right things, but it is entirely possible that she will end up side-lined in her own movie, ending up playing second fiddle to Trevor. So until I have actually seen the movie, WB will get no praise from me.

I was originally thinking Gurira would make a good Monica Rambeau, but having her play Okoye is also a very good pick. I wonder if she will be keeping her dreads or whether they'll be going for the Bald Women look.
Gunn says why the haven't released the Guardians footage yet
.
Lupita Nyong'o says there are two villains in Black Panther
, and they're both working together.
I keep wanting to say The Color Purple, but I don't know if that was a blockbuster. And that was 1985?

So from the interview, the villains could be Killmonger and Klaw, who have a somewhat ambiguous connection in the comics (Klaw is basically the reason Killmonger's father was killed and his family exiled, but he also partly raised him? It seemed complicated). And the help from the CIA could easily be Everett Ross. Which leaves Bucky for potential superhero backup, and would thus take care of all the previously established characters who could most likely show up in the movie.

Sort of depends on whether by blockbuster you mean an an effects-heavy action movie, or just any movie that generates a lot of box office.
Bad Boys and Django Unchained?
Django Unchained doesn't have the same feel, because a white protagonist is responsible for getting the plot moving forward, and has a pretty major role.
I think Black Panther is the first big action movie where all the central characters are black; and also as the first big movie that's set in Africa with black lead characters and isn't based on a historical event. I really, really hope that it's good. The choices for director and cast are making me optimistic. (Wish they could get TNC on the writing team. :D)

Jewish protagonist. Django is very much about minorities. But I guess that distinction's more for the race and representation thread.
I haven't been following as well as I could have, sorry if this has been answered already, but will Sebastian Stan be in Black Panther at all?

Oissu!Pretty sure his rights are with Fox
In that he's already shown up in an X-Men movie.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersOne the one hand, the ending of Civil War makes him a pretty perfect Chekhov's Gun. On the one hand, the emotional heft of him deciding to go into hibernation again would be diminished if he popped back out the next time it was convenient.

Ya know we have a DC thread for discussing DC stuff.
