Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Cool. I always loved Vulture and Shocker.

Not to mention Evangenline Lilly (37), Zoe Saldana (36) and Gwyneth Paltrow (36) the time their debut movie came out.

Lupita is in her late thirties, isn't she?

[up][up] People really seem to forget Evangeline Lilly's going to be coming in as Wasp before we get Larson as Captain Marvel.

And I didn't realize Saldana was that old, which only further makes the point.

[up]In case that's referring to my post, that's why I said first female solo lead. And 2018 is still rather late for their first female co-lead.

[up][up]Lupita is 32 or 33 I believe.

Well, I didn't realize Black Panther is that old, either. The only characters who really look old by now are Iron Man and War Machine. I am not sure how long they will be able to play those roles convincingly.

Well, War Machine is already paralyzed, so he's probably out of the superhero game now.

[up][up]They already seem to be taking Tony into a mentor direction with Peter, so maybe he'll get a successor eventually? And in Rhodey's case, he has the perfect reason to step down from active duty, but could still be around in a similar badass mentor function. (Not that the age difference between Don Cheadle and Brie Larson would really be seen as unusually big in Hollywood, but they might turn War Machine from Captain Marvel's love interest into a mentor, for example)

I wonder if they will eventually bring in Riri Williams? That might be really interesting.

[up]I was just thinking of that, too. She would make a great contrast to Tony, as well. Engineer genius, too, but from completely different circumstances.

That would be one way of continuing the MCU without recasting characters — since RDJ has become so iconic as Tony Stark, they may not want to recast him. So just make him into the mentor role and Riri into the superhero role and voila.

Well, War Machine is already paralyzed, so he's probably out of the superhero game now.

Only from the waist down, and we see him undergoing physical therapy. He may or may not recover. Whether he does or not, he wears a suit of powered armor; his legs don't really matter that much.

It is extremely doubtful that this is the end for War Machine.

That is actually what I always assumed they would do, introducing Legacy characters eventually instead of recasting...with a few exceptions. The characters which aren't suppose to age as fast as humans or are outright immortal could and should be recast eventually (perhaps phasing them out for a while and then allowing them to turn up again with a new actors). But I wouldn't want to see a recast for Tony simply because he is that old in canon, and I don't want Marvel to go for a sliding timeline for the movies. It would mess up the continuity.

He was also already shown using high-tech prosthesis anyway.

It was a joke skit that people who don't get context seem to think was actual footage for the movie and are now complaining about online. Because people are idiots, I guess.

[up]x4 Just a fun little skit the director of Thor 3 made for SDCC. It's probably not MCU canon.

It sounds cute. I hope it's released online.

They finally confirmed some of the Homecoming cast. Zendaya is indeed "Michelle" as was previously reported, Tony Revolori is Flash Thompson, Laura Harrier is Liz Allen, and Jacob Batalon is Ned Leeds.

Huh. Is Ned Leeds his classmate in this version? Because in the comics, wasn't he a reporter at the Daily Bugle? And it turned out that he was the Hobgoblin?

He was a reporter or something, but Hobgoblin framed him.

So with Killmonger being the villain in Black Panther, does this mean Klaw won't be in there? I haven't heard much about Andy Serkis being in Black Panther as of recently.
