Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Ghost Rider wasn't always like that? I thought that was part of the point behind the character.

Actually, having different demons bond to humans could explain how you have more than one Ghost Rider in the comics.

Ghost Rider wasn't always like that? I thought that was part of the point behind the character.

No, he's supposed to be empowered by a demon from a Faustian Pact with Mephisto. The stupid arc I was referring to tried to retcon him into being an angel on a holy mission to smite evil in service to God.

It's quite a profound shift in the character, and while I did fall out of comics for a while there, I'm pretty sure it's been ignored since then. At least, until Robbie came around and they went for a completely different source for his powers entirely - while also altering his powerset and vehicle. He has the burning skull transformation.

Robbie only superficially resembles the Ghost Rider, so I'd love to see him pick up Zarathos. The non-angel Zarathos, I mean.

[up][up]Yes. His car was owned by a serial killer who would sacrifice his victims for Satanic rituals.

Wasn't it stated that Zarathos was a fallen angel? That still counts as a demon sort of.

Looks like Surtur is indeed in Ragnarok!

[up][nja]Surtur is in Ragnarok (let's hope he's not wasted).

Jordan will be playing Killmonger like many predicted. Nyong'o will be playing Nakia, which is stretching the definition of love interest but makes a lot of sense since his actual romantic interests tend to be at other studios, or a Neutral Female Butt-Monkey like Monica Lynne.

OK...that trailer hyped me up for Doctor Strange now. Those visuals are amazing.

The Sanctum Sanctorum has Wi Fi? Excellent. I hate it when I'm at some mystical hideout full of wonders that defy my understanding of how the universe is supposed to work and I have to dip into my data plan to check my email.

There's actually an Asian person in the movie. Will wonders never cease?

Didn't win me over, and the visuals are still mostly the same kaleidoscope effects that didn't really wow me from the first trailer, but at least they're showing more of the characters this time. I have a feeling if I ever bother to see it in the theaters Mordo is going to be my favorite.

It just kinda feels really generic to me. The movie seems to be banking itself primarily on the visuals, so for those of us who haven't come away wowed yet it's going to be an uphill climb.

Between Ayesha, Nakia, and Hela, plus the return of Nebula, I'm really glad that they're pushing for a stronger female villain presence for this phase.

Ho-lee crap, was that Doctor Strange trailer balls-to-the-wall trippy or what?! surprised

I mean, the thing with the buildings, I was like "this is Inception times 20!"

In short, I'm still hyped as f#ck for Doctor Strange!

Also, that logo for Thor: Ragnarok. Was anyone getting 80's arcade game/TRON vibes? I mean, I don't hate it, but it's kinda left-field, don't you guys think?
