Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up]I'm sure the movie will involve political stuff and I'm sure not everyone in his country loves him. There's never been a national leader liked by everyone in history.

People are just saying they doubt the stuff you keep mentioning from Civil War is gonna factor into it. You're overthinking things.

Given characters like M'Baku and such, it's almost definite that there's going to be a lot of people against T'Challa's rule, but it don't think it'll be about his actions in Civil War - it'll probably be more of the whole "pretenders to the throne" bit.

If anything, given M'Baku's usual character and the kind of opposition T'Challa usually faces, the dissenters are probably going to be all for how T'Challa went out to murder the dude responsible for the T'Chaka death, but be against T'Challa growing past his vengefulness and growing as a person afterwards. The point of contention will probably be his trying to connect to the international community as apposed to going "fuck everyone."

There's also Killmonger who just straight up thinks T'Challa's family has done a bad job running the country, and that he'd be better.

There's also the White Wolf, who wants T'Challa to re-institute the secret police.

Though White Wolf isn't likely to actively try and overthrow T'Challa. Too loyal and all.

Somebody call the Vision!evil grin

Edit: So I just realized:

Cap being able to slightly move the hammer was a sign that he had the potential to be worthy, but the events of Captain America Civil War show WHY he's not completely worthy.

All those things people have been complaining about: they are there on purpose. When he sheds those flaws, then he'll be swinging that hammer the same way he throws his mighty shield:

AWESOMELY.

So with Mads Mikkelson is confirmed to be Kaecillius by the prequel comic, do you guys think Baron Mordo will be having a Teeth-Clenched Teamwork with Strange.

Well it's good they're forward-thinking enough to realize when it leaks, it's better to just throw up your hands and show the darn thing rather than take the Suicide Squad approach.

Officially releasing the footage so that everyone can see it from the official movie studio youtube channel rather than someone's crappy low-res leaked footage.

Suicide Squad's hand was forced when a camrip leaked online. The reason they generally don't like to do that is the footage is obviously unfinished, and they don't want people whining and complaining about how shitty it looks. Joke is on them though. People will still do that with an official trailer!

Either way, I like that James Gunn is a good sport about it. It always bothers me when studios act all betrayed because someone sneaked out footage, complaining about the fans in general. There is a giant group of people in Hall H, so you are basically attacking a number of fans who didn't do it (and might even not like the notion of doing it at all) because of one guilty person.

The entire point of any big Comic-Con, for Marvel and DC, is advertising. Leaks are free advertising. They've got no cause to crack down.

It takes a special kind of elitism and arrogance to say, "No, you have to pay a hundred bucks for the privilege of watching our advertising."

[up] To be honest, I am kind of stunned that so many people spend so much time and money and standing in line for hours for the "honor" to watch a trailer or some footage.

I dunno which is funnier: the revenge of the Thanos-copter, or the idea of a MCU Secret Wars. [lol]

It will take seventy years to have enough characters for a Secret War.

Please it would take a similar amount of time to have enough characters for Civil War.

[up][up][up] Spider-Man: The Animated Series did their version of Secret Wars with a severely reduced cast, so I don't see how the MCU couldn't do the same thing...

I'm more concerned with the part where Secret Wars is kinda unfilmable.

An eldritch being from beyond time and space creates a mass of land, abducts a bunch of heroes and villains, and makes them FIGHT!

Great concept for a video game. Terrible for a live-action movie.

I'm not sure if I agree with that one. In the end, it's just the same stuff happening in a more fantastic setting. If I'm remembering it right, in the original work the Beyonder even took a piece of Manhattan into his Patchwork World, so you could probably still have relatively normal character interactions.
