Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

In the case of the Prowler, it wouldn't be the first time the MCU has adapted a "was once a villain but became a hero through Character Development" as a straightforward villain without much nuance. See again: Kurse.

Or Ronan.

The number of villains isn't necessarily the problem, its how they're integrated into the narrative. Where films like Spider-Man 3, or IM 2, or TASM 2, etc started to go wrong, is when you had multiple villains who were played up as trying to be the MAIN villain.

By contrast, the Russo's, or Chris Nolan, etc were able to juggle multiple villains successfully because there was a clear hierarchy. Some were clearly "higher up" than others, and thus got more focus.

Although I'd argue with Nebula was underused in GOTG personally, especially since she was the far more interesting baddie (as compared to Ronan) imo.

There are multiple methods to have more than one villain without any of the overcrowding the movie...you can have them as early bird cameo in a one scene appearance, you can have them as random antagonist or you can have them working tightly together. Got G does all three of them. Between The Collector, Korath, Nebula, Ronan and Thanos the movie is packed with villains, but Ronan is the only one who truly counts. And that is not counting Yondu and Denarian Sal, who both take the role of Antagonists turned somewhat alley.

I forgot I didn't plan on seeing Homecoming, so the multiple villains thing doesn't matter to me.

Rumors they might go forward with a Silver Sable movie again.

Could be interesting, could overlap with any plans for a solo Black Widow film (ha) too.

Hmm, interesting. They haven't used Silver Sable in the comics much recently, but her biggest thing is that she's a mercenary/bounty hunter that led the Wild Pack (I almost got her mixed up with Sabra, who is an Israeli superhero). Perhaps Sony wants to try and make a Deadpool-like movie?

I could see her having a to show as well.

Being dead will do that.

Granted, Dan Slott reserved the right to go, "She survived!" at a later point via Never Found the Body but nobody's picked up that thread yet.

According to the Marvel wiki, Madame Web stated that she wasn't dead. Slott has picked up that plot thread yet, though.

So they go through with this could a potential plot be Silver Sable going after Steve, Natasha, Bucky, and the Raft escapees?

Not sure if posted, but Michael Mando of Orphan Black/Better Call Saul was cast in Homecoming.

Based on his typecasting, I'm going to guess his character will be involved in organized crime.

Edit- Although I understand that he plays a serious/competent character in the latter, from his character in the former, I can totally see him as Random Crook That Gets Webbed Up.

Before TASM 2 nuked Sony's shared universe idea, there were tentative planes for an all-female team movie led by Sable. I wonder if this is similar.

First Ragnarok set photos. They also mention building space ships for the movie.

So we've got Doctor Strange in November, which has finished filming and is currently in post-production. And Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 just finished primary filming, which should come out in May 2017, while Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok are both beginning filming and they are coming out July and November 2017.

Man, I can't wait.

It looks like cosmic or not, at least some of it is going to take place on Earth, which is good - at least imo. I was worried about that.

I wouldn't mind going full on cosmic with a few of those properties.

Well things like Guardians or Doctor Strange I would be quite happy to see ploughing their own little furrows away from the Avengers proper. But characters like Thor and the Hulk who are already intrinsically linked with the Avengers, I don't think them just ditching that link outright would be a great idea. I mean, don't have the Avengers turn up in Ragnarok or whatever but Thor's fondness for Midgard is a pretty defining characteristic of his, I can't see him just upping and leaving without a question.

So who are the MCU directors? It just occurred to me - over in the DCEU we have Snyder, who gets ton of shit, and in Fox we have Singer...who gets tons of shit. I don't see anybody getting nearly this level of vitriol in the MCU.

The only person that ever got close to that was Whedon, and even that wasn't much.

MCU doesn't concentrate creative control of its franchise onto its directors the way the DCCU and XMU seem to. The closest is Whedon and eventually the Russos, but I don't think Whedon is still quite as hated as Snyder is (who surprisingly has a lot of defenders on Tumblr for some reason, ironically many of them heavily involved in SJ type stuff). Singer doesn't really seem to be hated so much as viewed with a giant "meh" by most groups, but lacks the fanbase of vocal defenders Whedon and Snyder do.

Singer doesn't have much of a hatedom, to be honest. He's got a lot of people looking at him funny for possible pedophilia and definite creepiness though. The other Fox directors are Matthew Vaughn (who Singer wanted to direct The Last Stand and who eventually directed First Class), Brett Ratner (typical studio director who isn't really to blame for The Last Stand, I think most people blame Fox anyways), James Mangold (who seems to have some love for directed The Wolverine, I guess, though we'll see how people react to the R-Rated Wolverine film that I'm hyped for), and whoever directed X-Men Origins (who admitted the film was shit and most people blame Fox for it anyways). Tim Rothman directed Deadpool, but most people talk more about Ryan Reynolds pushing for Fox to make the film for nearly twenty years.

As for MCU directors, Jon Favreu, the Russos, and Joss Whedon are the most well known.

Whedon's basically been phased out in favor of the Russos, and then there's Gunn in regards to Got G. Other than that, not a lot of consistency here. But then again, the DCEU will probably jump in the same boat once it gets more movies under its belt.

I guess there's technically Josh Trank and the aborted FF/X-Men shared universe that was planned too, but... we all know how that shook down and he's as good as blacklisted now.

I'm actually really amused how many supporting cast members of Spider-Man: Homecoming keep being announced like, every single day.
