Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

He said what also contributed to its demise was the backlash from execs against female superhero movies after the one-two punch of Catwoman and Elektra.

I think I'll also have to mutter something about pearls in regard to that.

Mmm...the new synopsis for Got G Vol 2 mentions "traversing the outer reaches of the cosmos"...this actually sounds a little bit like it might end being a space western...this sounds like the introduction line for the original Star Trek, doesn't it? Or it could be a classic explorer story....

Anyway, sounds exciting. I wonder who the fan favourite characters from the comics might be....

There's a rumor there will be an appearance from some of the original Guardians.

Well in gog we only got a glimpse of one section of a very large cosmos. They didn't really leave the Andromeda Galaxy.

There's Andromeda M31 (Skrulls), dwarf galaxy (?) Milky Way (us), Pinwheel Galaxy (Shi'ar) , LMC (Kree), Black Galaxy (Ego), Fornax Galaxy (Sakaar) etc in the comics. Even within these places there are other races and planets.

I'm pretty sure Quill's dad lives outside the general Nova portrayal area, which can be way further than Knowhere.

In an interview with the Guardian, the "Independence Day: Resurgence" director expressed disdain at the suggestion that his filmography bears any resemblance to the modern superhero movie.
If anything, Mr. Emmerich, it's the modern superhero movie that should be expressing disdain that it bears any resemblence to your filmography. tongue

Filmography, or do you mean cinematography? Because if it's the latter, I think he's actually pretty damn good at it. It's just his writing is awful.

This photoshop made me laugh. [lol]

Eh, I stopped caring about Emmerich's declarations about cinema after Anonymous and Stonewall proved he couldn't do non-blockbuster drama.

Also wasn't one of Emmerich's movies Universal Soldier, which was about Jean Claude Van Damme as a super soldier? How does that character fit an average joe?

Universal Soldier was about a dead guy who, like, gets brought back to life as a zombie super soldier or something? Never seen it, don't want to.

The villain and female lead of Doctor Strange have been confirmed.

Mads Mikkelsen's character is Kaecilius and Rachel MacAdams is the Christine Palmer.

Looking up Kaecilius, he's apparently a disciple of Baron Mordo in the comics.

Has anyone guessed him beforehand? Also guess that's our first actual look at Wong on the bottom right then.

I've literally never heard of the character until now. He's not even that big in the comics.

[up][up]Nope. Like Mantis very few people seemed to guess it.

The most recent rumors were Mads was playing Nightmare or a Race Lifted Kaluu.

Interesting. The set shots made it look like Strange and Mordo were still on the same side during the end, and they mentioned Mordo would be a more morally ambiguous character than in the comics, so it's possible what happens is that Kaecilius takes things too far, and Even Evil/Whatever He Is Has Standards so Mordo joins Strange in stopping him.

So we have two completely different Night Nurses in the MCU?

AlleyOop Since: Oct, 2010
#59749: Jun 21st 2016 at 1:29:30 PM

I think they sidestepped it by having it so while Claire Temple's role is similar to the Night Nurse, she can't actually use the name itself. Whereas the one in Dr. Strange is the Night Nurse, even if her role in the films may emerge to be something different.

Hopefully we don't get a cheesy Romantic Plot Tumor with her in this movie. Especially if the movies plan on bringing in Clea down the line.
