Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Kind of a shame a Western (i.e a story set in the past) would be the only way to have Native Americans in the MCU.

I remember we were discussing a Native American comic character named Redwolf or something the other day. Maybe try to change him up some to where he's less stereotypical and then incorporate him in some series taking place in the Wild West days with Two-Gun Kid and Phantom Rider.

Seriously, I wanna see Phantom Rider. If we can't get Ghost Rider yet, Phantom Rider would still be pretty cool.

All American Indians in the MU are stalk stereotypes except 5 of them (American Eagle, Wyatt Wingfoot, Jay Littlebear, Moonstone, and Echo). And there is about 16 in total, 13 of which aren't villains. You're not gonna get a bunch of well written indigenous people from these comics. Btw most have nothing to do with the western genre.

Fans argue Red Wolf is the best, treating a great plan tribe fairly under supercomicbook norms, while others who are actually Native can't seem to connect with him aside from the sadness of history, which of course is whitewashed in the red wolf series.

As I said on the film race page thing, your average writer writes Indians in accordance to how Indian they can get. Every aspect about the character is related to them being Indian. People forget real life Indians don't go around asking "what's something Indian I could do right now? Could I be eating this Whopper in a more 'Indian' way?"

Btw you can have a character whose great grandmother was a Cherokee but that won't automatically make them a full blood indian because it's an identity rooted in their current cultural identification. Having Indian blood doesn't grant any sort of specialness!

"That's why I proposed someone like Galactus. Someone you're not supposed to like or sympathize with."

Hey hey hey, it's very easy to sympathize with Galactus. He is a force of nature combined with emotions to create ultimate tragedy. He's far more noble than someone like Thanos or actual villains yet he's also much more dangerous than many of them simply by his nature.

Also I have no opinion on future MCU directors but I really want JMS to write for a movie.

[up] x4 The MCU doesn't really have to adapt everything from the comic you know. Like the Falcon's really racist origin was changed to a much better one for the movie universe. I'll probably wait after Black Panther to see the writers of the MCU write minority characters.

Falcon's original origin wasn't so bad. His origin has been retconned back to the original.

You can always do a space western instead....(though I would still prefer a space pirate movie).

A Cloak and Dagger movie (the genre, not the characters) would be cool, too.

I like the version of Falcon in the MCU...not every origin has to be overly complicated imho.

Huh? The Falcon's original backstory (where he was a social worker) was done by Stan Lee and Gene Colan, while his really racist origin (where he was a pimp named "Snap" Wilson) was done by J. M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck. All of those people are white.

With all these actors being announced for Homecoming I'm wondering how they're going to spread screentime among them without making them all feel wasted.

[up][up]...too easy.

[up][up][up]Okay, he looks like he could be Robbie, so Glover could be Aaron Davis.

[up]Chances are most of these people won't be plot relevant or that important here, it could mostly be for setting up other things.

Therefore, I assumed you were talking about Falcon's origins. If you weren't, you should have been clearer.

So I wonder why David Hayter hasn't ever worked on an MCU film or if he'll ever work on one in future? (He wrote X1, 2 and Watchmen for those who mainly know him as that guy who voices Solid Snake in English)

Hayter was going to do a Black Widow solo movie that actually sounded pretty OK if a bit by the numbers. But then the MCU happened and it got scuttled.
