Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up]Depends. I've always thought part of the reason they don't have Hulk talk is because the movies generally favor Banner over the Hulk anyway (usually for budget purposes).

I mean, if signing the Accords meant I'd be under Ross's thumb, I'd be fighting on Team Cap's side too. Ross has a clear agenda that he could (and more than likely would) abuse for his own ends.

Don't be silly, his ultimate goal is clearly to get them to wash his car and paint his house.

I can't help but think that watching the Avengers use Hulk in battle with minimal issues and even getting him to change back pretty much on command must've caused a big ugly pit of anger and resentment in him.

Define "minimal."

He worked pretty effectively in the opening assault on Hydra.

RE: Nobody blaming Cap for leaking SHIELD's database.

Let's not forget that Black Widow and Nick Fury were more involved in the decision. Fury may have been unwilling at first, but if he were fully opposed then he could've just refused to give them his access. That chat with Pierce, seeing what he had become, looks like it did a lot of convincing.

Considering Cap's leaks allowed Zemo to enact his plan, I'd say it kinda bit him in the ass.

[up][up][up]I'm sure there were a bunch of people who were critical of the decision to have the Hulk join the team who were eventually vindicated when South Africa happened.

[up]x4 Relevant to this point, in Civil War Zemo only ever attributes the leak to Black Widow when he's talking to the Hydra agent.

[up][up]But unless the Avengers told the world what happened, they think he did.

So I'm kind of curious why Black Panther is released in February 2018, which is a weird day for a Marvel movies that are usually blockbusters. Is it because of the 3 movies schedule Marvel is doing? Feb is also the "dump month", so I don't get why it was released that time.

I mean, if signing the Accords meant I'd be under Ross's thumb, I'd be fighting on Team Cap's side too.

One can not sign without being on Team Cap, Team Cap was all about defying the accords, not simply going "Yeah I think I'd rather not work for Ross, I'm gonna retire now".

[up] I mean, I'm sure that's nice and all, but black people would appreciate the movie do well enough to have a sequel and more films with black lead.

There were movies that were released in February that have been big hits. Case in point: Deadpool.

[up][up]One of the biggest hits of the year just came out in a February. The perception of it just being a dump month is no longer strictly the case.

I wanna know do he Avengers do press conferences in this universe. It's tradition in the comics but I wonder did they do one to announce Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Hawkeye were gone?

@shatterstar: Black Panther being released during Black History month will probably make it a success anyway. It's a film by Marvel Studios, it stars a character who was the goddamn highlight of Civil War, a character black fans have been excited for for ages.

@Phi Sat Character development. I thought Norton's Hulk was bland and boring.

I really hope they don't go all "hey black folks, here's your superhero movie" in the marketing. It being a Black History Month release makes me worry.

Honestly I was more worried when it was against Justice League. Ironically I'm not worried about that prospect now.tongue
