Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The Doctor Strange Lego set. Possible spoilers I guess (you can never tell with Legos).

Lego spoiled Giant-Man (pretty cool build if you ask me, and sadly unused in the Avengers game). Butthey also lie a little too (Hank Pym and Agent 13).

What did they lie about with Agent 13? I know they lied about Hank Pym donning the old Ant-Man outfit to help Scott.

Super Hero Airport Battle set

They lied about Agent 13 participating in the airport battle.

Ah, I see.

I kinda wish she was in there, to be honest. Even if that meant they'd have to add in another person to Team Iron Man to even it up.

[up] x4 I don't see Rachel Mc Adam's character in the set. So she is confirmed to be "bland love interest #3" (after Jane in TDW and Betty in Hulk)

That set has 2 members of Team Iron Man against 5 members of Team Cap.

If it's true she's playing Night Nurse, well it's not like she had all that much to do in the comics either. Unless she's mostly here to help take care of Strange during his illness and then they hook up in the next movie when they do The Oath.

The toys are made very far in advance, so I think at one point Sharon was at the airport battle. There's concept of her fighting Team Iron Man at the airport, and the uniform she's wearing in said art was reused for a bunch of toys and merchandise images. I think she had a bigger part in the script but then had to be cut down.

Other things though were completely fabricated, like the Lego set of Black Panther chasing Cap and Bucky with his jet (which would have been cool).

And of course there was the infamous Mandarin tank.

Every episode of Daredevil Season Two that doesn't end with Matt and Foggy making out is a disappointment.

[up][up][up] I don't get why they picked Night Nurse to be the "bland LI" when Strange already had Clea to be his debut LI, who is much more interesting and relevant because she is the daughter of Dormamu.

[up] The same can be said for every Cap and Bucky's on screen appearance cool.

[down] Still. Dormamu doesn't need to appear in this movie. Clea can just be a normal human in this one who suddenly learned about her demonic origin in the second movie.

[down][down] Marvel needs to shot down any slash ship involving him and Wong or Modo (or Wong plus Modo).

Depends on if they're even using Dormammu in this movie. If they do, let's hope they don't waste him. If they don't, he'll always show up in another movie as a damn good antagonist.

[up][up]And here I was hoping Strange would forego yet another bland love interest.

But if he has to have one I wish they'd go with Clea, that way Dormy is his uncle-in-law.

[up]I'm personally hoping he'll be a presence, like Thanos in GOTG, but won't actually step up as the main villain until the second or third film. Dude's one of the most powerful entities in the Marvel universe (and my personal favorite villain), would be a shame to waste him on a movie that also has to serve as Strange's origin story. Plus he has a sick design that needs to be put off for as long as possible so that special effects/CGI technology is more advanced.

Joblo suggested Dormammu and Mordo would be Co-Dragons but that was very early in development and they weren't as sure on that as they were on the other stuff that they got right, like Strange's costume. Chances are Dormy could just be using Mikkelsen as a temp body if that's him.

@Agent 13 would make the airport fight uneven: They could have just brought in Captain Marvel. They already planned on doing that in AOU.

Would she really? She would probably be the weakest person there.

I just thought of something:

If they do end up going for a Masters of Evil type plot for Infinity War Part I, what if they bring in The Leader?

[up]

Yeah, in retrospect, six people on each side was probably enough.

Anom there's magical and extra dimensional beings who make big D look like an ant, so they should get screen time too 5 movies from now. Also big D isn't the only one of his kind. I would rather explore who he is rather than what he can do.Otherwise what would be the difference between him and another Elderitch Abomination? Their power level lol?

If he appears it would be Dr. Strange foremost before ay other title because any other wouldn't fit into the point of his existence. However, in Dr Strange 1 he most likely would be teased a tiny bit here and there. He's an ultimate evil hidden in the shadows. Sometimes people put barriers on his realm so he doesn't escape before his appearance.

Based on the synopsis thus far, Ancient One and Baron seem to need Strange's help because of a problem the two face. I say Mads is that problem, breaking into dimensions no human should mess with. Eventually he reaches the dark dimension.

Mads might be Kaluu. Obviously very different.

Imo the best thing to do is to go: Starter Villain + hints of Mordo Heel Turn that directly lead to a Dormammu hook -> Dormammu, with Mordo revealing himself as The Dragon or The Heavy -> interdimensional villain even bigger and more powerful than Dormmamu, like - fingers crossed - Shuma Gorath.

Alan Silvestri's going to do the music for the Infinity War duology.

Well that's just dandy! I actually liked Civil War's OST more than a lot of people did, but I can't see Jackman's style working as well for the Infinity War films.

As an OST Civil War is consistently good. It's just that the credits unfortunately has to follow Captain America March and Taking a Stand.

I love Jackman, but Silvestri is still the one who did my favourite Soundtrack in the MCU for The First Avenger (The Winter Soldier is place two...Got G would be third, not counting the songs). So, all is good. I mean, the Captain America Franchise is the most distinctive tonal wise, partly because Silvestri introduced a specific theme for him. We could use more of that.
