Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Look, can we move past this and go back to discussing Wanda? We're starting to derail.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

No! We absolutely cannot get back to Wanda! Because it's time for our hourly debate about who was right and wrong in Civil War!

Now, I don't know about y'all, but I got an inkling that the audience was supposed to find some kind of fault in Zemo's actions. Like, in theory, there weren't supposed to be right or wrong sides but the narrative seemed pretty biased against him! We didn't even get ONE scene of him rescuing puppies from a burning fire or showing off how sexy his ass looks in leather pants. NOT ONE.

Zemo is evil because he has weird lips.

Seriously, what the fuck is up with those lips?

Jeff Goldblum talks the Collector.

"He’s a hedonist, a pleasure-seeker,” explains Goldblum, "an enjoyer of life and tastes and smells. I thought, ‘I can do that, I’ll bet!’ I’m working on my part every day. I’m a sponge, researching.” He’s putting his unique Goldblum stamp on the role, too. "[Taika Waititi] is encouraging me to improvise and make it my own, and that’s what I’m trying to do. I hope he doesn’t throw me out on the first day!”

Goldblum revealed that he'll be filming for “three weeks or a month” in Brisbane. “Not only Chris Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett, Anthony Hopkins… jeez, that’s gonna be fun. I’ve never been to Australia except to do these little publicity things.”

He’s eager to work with his new boss, too. "I love Taika Waititi,” he enthuses, heaping praise on the Kiwi filmmaker’s vamp comedy What We Do In The Shadows.

He is, Comic Writer just put the wrong name by accident.

Either way, I hope that, if they're really going for something similar to Planet Hulk, that they don't make it distract too much from the main plot.

I only recently found out both that Jeff Goldblum is the Grandmaster and that Kurt Russell is Quill's dad.

I can't stop crying.

It's so glorious.

Has it been made official that Kurt Russell is Quill's dad?

Variety or whomever called it a long time before the official news of Russell signing on so they probably were privy to that information.

There's also not a lot of other dudes in the cast I could reasonably see it being. Unless they did something stupid like making Peter the son of Thanos.

Yeah, The Other Wiki specifically sites that Variety article. And it should also be noted that The Other Wiki has so far made no mention of Nathan Fillion's involvement.

To be fair, Nathan Fillion was also in the first Go TG... as a blue alien who got nasally violated by Groot. I guess it's not impossible he could reprise the role...

People have completely jumped the gun with that. Literally all we know is there's an easter egg involving some posters.

People jumping the gun? Concerning a Marvel related news? Really?

Seriously, though, I only accept casting news when they come from Marvel itself. Yeah, once a while the trades got it right, but there are also a number of times they are slightly or even totally off.

I trust the trades. They're usually rather on point. They reported the Tessa Thompson thing weeks before Marvel and they called Cate Blanchett months before that.

Sites like Deadline, Variety, and Hollywood Reporter are usually very reliable. Marvel sometimes holds off on announcing things for months even after they've already been extensively confirmed and the people have been seen onset.

Yeah. The sites that I'm skeptical of are superhero news ones, and even then it's a toss up. Joblo for instance was spot on in all he character and plot details they had about Civil War.

Yeah, Variety and Deadline are super reliable when it comes to casting news.

Grandmaster is a perfectionist and a true gamesman but he lacks understanding of the human mind and often underestimates them. His games are almost promoted and made by himself, being pure team combat. The conditions: win by KO or death

My thoughts:

  • Wanda should be in jail.

  • Both Steve and Tony were wrong, and both are screwed when Hulk gets back.tongue

  • Spider Man is a menace.

She's needs to go to Made Hulk Crazy Jail.

The problem with her imprisonment for Civil War is that it's not for the right reasons.

I don't hate Wanda as a character but I do think it's rather odd that the narrative kinda tries to gloss over her mistakes. It feels as if the accidental Crossbones explosion in Civil War is treated as more of an atrocity than siccing the Hulk on Johannesburg, even by Wanda herself.

In fact, I don't think that the Hulk incident is EVER brought up as Wanda's fault; she only freaks out in Sokovia about having helped create Ultron in the first place.
