Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

But Black Widow is a full blown tragedy. If Marvel did a Norrin origin they would have to focus a great deal on him before he sold himself to big g. The comics hardly shed light on his previous life. There's a sudden skip to look he's the sliver suffer, all moopy and shit. Also the "goodness" of humans that made him switch sides was more of a plot device than something he personally admired in relation to himself/experiences. The only major trait I find tragic about him is his heavy heart. Serving as an accomplice to big g in the destruction of untold worlds has left him cold. In that sense there is sadness.

Suffer would work well alongside Nova and Dr. Strange. The three are buddies. Plus he did would fit at home in James Gunn GOG. Mephisto is his primary bad guy. Yea more reasons why Fox should give back the rights.

[up] There was an animated Silver Surfer series and its first episode was all about how he became the Silver Surfer. They could easily expand on the ideas in it.

Yep. An expansion is needed. Big g comes to eat Zenn-La, the planet Norrin so much loves with all of his heart and then bam he gives himself away to big g. That would be emotionally unearned if someone didn't show why he cares about Zenn-La and how. It's not difficult as long as someone doesn't focus on rising to the immediate conflict.

I especially love the notion that the idea was to lead Galactus away from populated planets and instead the Silver Surfer ends up forgetting who he used to be and becomes his tool.

In any case a movie should start with the planet itself, showing how peaceful and happy the people living there are, making us care about them, and then they can built up Galactus coming, them collecting information about him and realizing what might happen to the planet, trying to evacuate as many people as possible while still looking for a way to stop Galactus, perhaps showing a failed attempt and finally the fateful decision which leads the Silver Surfer being created. The mixture of "thank god, those people are safe" mixed with "damnit, now even more people will die elsewhere" would, imho, a perfect and challenging ending for a movie.

I'm fine with X-Men being separate from the MCU for now, but I want the Fantastic 4 and their associated characters in the MCU so badly it's hurting my soul. I want the moment when Ghost Rider brings Galactus to his knees with a Penance Stare so badly I can taste it.

I want Doom back, at least.

I could do without the Fantastic Four in the MCU for now.

I'm becoming so board of white male protagonists in super hero films that I'm not sure I want a FF film unless they change up to focus to be on sue or do some demographic bending.

I could care less about the FF, but Doom is the real crown jewel. Though I feel like we've had this discussion many times before, haha.

I mean.

Ben is Jewish.

And we now have precedent for a black Johnny Storm. Not, er, good precedent, but most folks seem to like Michael B. Jordan. Dude lucked out that Creed overshadowed F4.

Hell, we have precedent for a Hispanic Sue Storm, kinda.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

If they do try to change up the races of the FF I hope they make both Johnny and Sue black this time.

As for an FF movie in the MCU. I'm not sure if I necessarily want that. I'd be more interested in seeing them as guest stars in a GOTG 3 with Galactus or the Skrulls as the main villains.

What was he supposed to say? I'm sure he is genuine, don't get me wrong, but was anyone there thinking he'd say "LOL she sucks" in front of a large crowd?

Speaking of, Hayley Atwell is not a fan of Steve/Sharon.

I don't dislike Captain America/Sharon, but like Black Widow/The Hulk, Starlord/Gamora, and Ant-Man II/Hope it didn't need to be there at all.

Star Lord/Gamora isn't really a thing though.

"Well, first of all she'd be turning over in her grave," Atwell said, with a grin. "She'd be like 'no.' And she'd inject herself with the blue serum and become a super villain. She'd break out of her coffin and ground [Sharon]. She'd ground her. Then she'd kick Steve's ass as well."

"She'd want the best for her and she'd want her dating a good guy. And now with this whole 'Hail Hydra" business, I don't know if Steve's good enough for her,"

Hayley Atwell is freaking hilarious. I really hope that push she's doing for some kind of further Agent Carter content bears fruit, because she's one of the best parts of the MCU.

[up][up][up]Starlord/Gamora wasn't really a thing and Hope/Scott always seemed like a joke to me.[nja]

[up]Guess we have the plot for the next Captain America movie.

Star Lord/Gamora isn't really a thing though.

It's enough of a thing and it'll probably show up in the sequel.

And I agree. Not saying the niece thing's an immediate 'Squick out' but it's weird that it didn't even give the two of them pause.

At most it got a few moments of teasing but nothing about the ending of the movie gave me the impression it was going to become a romantic relationship.

If anything, based on how the final cut of the movie presented it, the niece thing was the actual push that made him commit to going after her.

[up][up]Seemed to me like Unresolved Sexual Tension for a future full romance in the same way Pepper and Tony were in Iron Man 1.

As long as Sharon isn't presented as a replacement, then it's not squicky for me.

Not sure if the MCU plays into that though, I don't feel like Steve is sufficiently over Peggy for it to work.

I don't think you can present Sharon as anything but a replacement. I mean, she's a female agent last named Carter who has the hots for Steve. There's nothing about her that's distinguishable from her aunt and I doubt future projects will have enough time to flesh her out more. At least Peggy had a tv show to further develop her character.
