Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Namor is a good candidate. A lot of artists already portray him as looking Asian, maybe even stereotypically so. It wouldn't be hard to buy an Asian actor playing him as comics-accurate. Also I don't think the Atlanteans necessarily line up to one specific real-world race so they have a lot of breadth with casting ethnicities for the character. If they make him half-human rather than pure Atlantean his backstory as the son of a man named Mckenzie could easily be changed to a more appropriate ethnicity as necessary.
As for canon Latin@ characters there's the various White Tigers if Black Panther doesn't get to him first, as well as Echo. She's deaf so that would definitely be an interesting thing to portray.

Master Izo warrants extended screen time while the rest are almost similar to Kirigi, who doesn't speak. People like Master Izo require the same dedication Stick was given. I don't call Cossbones interesting. His persona was badass and alarming (so was Nobu's), while Pierce, a direct, primary antagonist given a face, had a tiny fraction of personalty and actions not associated with how evil he was. However, the Russo brothers are not writing Daredevil nor have anything to do with Netflix. Genrealzing how those characters were handled with the entirety of a single crazy magical ninja cult is weird. The Hand isn't about getting to know its single members on a personal level because they are well flat in the same style as Synder's Superman, but the one trait they are known for is at least driven forward in contrast to being restrained.
The way The Hand seems to be set up is based on its objective more than the people who run it. For now they are a horde of ninjas who would go to hell and back for something magical, while the "true" leaders range anywhere from a business man to a warrior who believes in the power aspect Yamato-Damashii. We just weren't given much information on the Hand's objective, which intruded upon other plot threads. The Hand exist for world building something new into the MCU instead of new people we will talk about for years to come. Unless season 3 changes something, we aren't going to know them in deeper, nuanced details.
Now contrast any Hand, including future ones, to the upcoming Colleen Wing and I will tell you now there will be a huge difference; one feels three dimensional. Yet they both rely on that "all Asians know martial arts" clichie.
Yes, Echo automatically makes sense with Daredevil because she is one of his lovers. Plus she would accommodate his disability.

And to cast a Tibetan actor to play him. Tibetan, specifically. Japanese/Korean/Some other vaguely Asian ethnicity if Tibetan isn't available, but absolutely NOT Chinese. As Cargill points out, casting a Chinese actress to play a Tibetan character at this point in time would be making a very unpleasant political statement whether it's intended or not.
It would be taking China's side on the Tibetan genocide and declaring to the world, "Tibet is fundamentally Chinese now, and not a property of their own."

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Which wouldn't have surprised me, given how the international community seems to love ignoring what was done to Tibet in order to not upset China.
Sorry. I'll get off that soapbox now.
Literally all anyone ever needed to do to sell me on America Chavez as a character was show me this panel.
The international community ignores what happened to the Native Americans too. A lot of lives have been lost and a lot of cultures wiped out by assimilation by foreign powers. Tibet was gobbled up by China fifty years ago. To much of that world, that makes it history rather than an unjust occupation.
Also, America Chavez is awesome and we should totally get her. In addition to being minority representation of the racial variety, she's also gay.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Speaking of Native Americans, what do you think of a Red Wolf solo film? Unfortunately the character has a lot of stereotypical Magical Native American traits, but he could be modernized into a sheriff or reservation administrator, and as far as genre diversification goes it could be a modern-style Western/crime thriller. They can tie it into the MCU by having it so the villains are powered by Kree/HYDRA/AIM/whatever tech or be an Early-Bird Cameo.

The only thing I've read with Red Wolf in it personally was the Marvel 1872 miniseries which was pretty good. Anyway while representation is rarely a sufficient reason to justify to execs why a particular franchise should be made, I do think the possible genre diversification would be beneficial. Alternatively they could make it a Netflix series as well since it probably will be a lot more grounded.
It would also be a way to bring up the various issues Native Americans face such as human trafficking, worries of culture loss, and so without being too anvilicious. For example the villains may be kidnapping local women to assist in their plans, and Red Wolf is the reservation's go-to man for investigating these kind of crimes, since it's hard to get the feds or whatever government officials are normally responsible for administering justice to do anything about it. They could also use the issues of culture loss to help contextualize Red Wolf's own Magical Native American-y powers without being too stereotypical.

My thought is that Kate Bishop would best be served by a show, probably Netflix. Clint would be a supporting cast member and mentor. Sort of on the run because of Civil War.
Marvel probably doesn't want to do that because Arrow even though the approaches would be different.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersA Kate Bishop "Hawkeye" series could introduce people like America Chavez for hopeful spinoff reasons.
Maybe a mix of the first and second half of the Fraction Hawkeye book. Kate as a kind of bored rich girl hero for hire.
Living off her family's money up until the point when she gets cut off because she realized her dad was a big ol' criminal.
Hawkeye shows up to confront her about taking his name and then just kind of goes 'well whatever' and sticks around to be a mentor.
It'd have to be adapted differently but maybe even the scene where smol Kate is a snot to the Matador/reasonable equivalent.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersSomeone pointed out with Hulk, Doctor Strange, and now Valkyrie and Namor, Marvel has most of the original Defenders. It'd be funny if there's a Mythology Gag at some point.

Are there any Mexican or mixed-mexican characters (specifically heroes) in the Marvel Universe? I can't seem to remember even one.
Also, I have a question to you guys. Y'all name a lot of heroes, but most of them are kinda obscure or not really big. What character do you think Marvel would most probably do next? Seeing as we already got most of the heavy hitters in movies, I don't think there's a lot more to choose from, and sooner or later Marvel will have to take a chance with unknown (to the general public) heroes.
To me, if Ms. Marvel keeps up with her recent popularity (I mean Kamala Khan) then there's probability of a movie being made. Maybe Miles Morales and Nova too, eventually, but I'm really hoping for a Ms. Marvel movie being made in the near future.
Also, what's the name of the Superman expy guy who thinks he's a hero and most of the time ends up as an antagonist (if not a straight up villain)? You know, the guy with the sun symbol. He'd make an interesting antagonist.

That would be The Sentry. He's not very well-liked and most people don't seem interested in writing him either, except as a side character in teamup books.
Anyway as far as lead heroes go, of the characters who haven't already been mentioned there's also Moon Knight* , the Runaways* , and Hercules* .

Well what characters could be racelifted to be Latino or Asian?
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
