Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yeah, but Carol's real arch-enemy (Mystique) can't be used.

So if they do go for a Masters of Evil type scenario for Infinity War Part I, they've got the possibility of using Moonstone too, then. May as well toss in whatever villains might wind up in Ant-Man and The Wasp, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange too, come to think of it. Maybe they'll use Whirlwind? He's a recurring Ant-Man enemy, if I recall correctly.

Whirlwind is the closest thing the Wasp has to an archenemy iirc, so I really hope he does appear in Ant-Man and The Wasp.

I think the possibility of Strange's enemies being on the Masters depends on whether they're folding Strange himself into the Avengers. He and his Rogues Gallery are not particularly tied with them in the comics and imo they all work best that way, but I wouldn't be surprised if Marvel Studios went "he's in the movies, he's an Avenger" for convenience's sake.

I mean, the Hulk isn't really tied either and yet he's in there. Hell, they could always try to tie it into the comic Defenders by having Strange organize them or something.

Hulk or characters connected to him have been off and on members of the Avengers since the team was founded, though, and even when he's not on the team his characters and problems are more connected with the rest of the Marvel Universe. Strange's mythos tends to be almost completely separate from the rest of the universe with rare exceptions, though he does cross over at times.

It's like what the films are currently doing with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

I thought Hulk was a founding member, left, and then didn't come back until that Avengers vs. X-Men thing?

Either way, you have a point about Strange. Eh, maybe they'll just have Klaw, Moonstone, and Whirlwind show up in Infinity War Part I with Zemo, Abomination, and Hammer. Seriously, I really want them to make Hammer actually be a good villain like in the comics.

She-Hulk has been a member at times, though.

They could totally save the Hammer name and make a good Masters of Evil mythology gag by introducing Justine Hammer instead. I'm still surprised AOS hasn't brought in her or Zeke Stane, given the whole "hip young agents in a superhero universe" premise.

Maybe, I dunno. Is Sam Rockwell gonna be busy during the time they'll be filming Infinity War?

[up] Not Justin Hammer, Justine Hammer, Justin's daughter in the comics. And Ezekial Stane was Obidiah Stane's son who implanted repulsor technology in his body and tried to kill Iron Man.

I know who Justine Hammer is, I'm saying that if Sam Rockwell is gonna be busy during the time of filming Infinity War, and they feel like introducing another Hammer, they could always use Justine Hammer.

On the other hand, "child of the old villain coming back for revenge" is admittedly a lame plot. Though that doesn't mean they couldn't find a way of making it work.

It'd all depend on motivation. Zemo pretty much got all he wanted in Civil War, so he'd need something to coerce him into taking part in the Masters of Evil. I can't see the MCU Zemo as being their founder.

Come to think of it, if they do use Justin or Justine Hammer, I can see it being like that line of dialogue in Age of Ultron about who runs the Avengers. Tony funds everything but Steve technically leads it. Using Hammer as Tony's counterpart and Zemo as Steve's counterpart, that might work.

Huh, was going to say Justin Hammer doesn't seem old enough to have a supervillain daughter but Sam Rockwell is apparently almost fifty. She'd be on the young side though.

They could make Justine like Sasha and have her be his granddaughter. Or use Sasha.

I don't recall Hammer even having a wife in Iron Man 2. Hell, didn't he flirt with that journalist lady at one point?

Alright then, suppose Hammer has an ex-wife, and suppose they had a child together (or hell suppose he had a child out of wedlock). Why would that child want vengeance on the Avengers? Would that child be old enough to be a legal adult?

It'd be fun if Justine shows up and everything thinks she's out to get revenge for Hammer, and then it turns out she doesn't give a damn about her father and she's actually opposing the Avengers for her own reasons.

Though on the other hand MCU Klaue doesn't seem the kind of guy to invent something extravagant and flashy, let alone use it over far more practical bullets

Imo, I would prefer if MCU Klaw just gets killed off in his first scene. I'm sorry, but I found that cuttlefish scene in Ao U stupid.

Ok, who let Light Yagami in here?

It'd probably be easier to use Ezekiel Stane, to be honest. The big thing to me is age. Maybe they could incorporate some of Justine Hammer's characteristics into Ezekiel Stane.

Though I don't remember if they mentioned Stane having a wife either.
