Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Agreed. And let's remember, no matter how "good" the source is, it only says that she is in talks, not that the deal is locked down.
Hawkeye's pregnant wife, or Peter's aunt, don't really help your argument because they're non-powered civilian supporting characters. And I'm tired of the women getting consigned to the "youth" dynamic. Why can Hawkeye be a seasoned SHIELD agent, and Falcon a seasoned ex-vet, and Rhodey a seasoned military officer, but Carol needs to be younger? Don't buy it, don't like it.
I'd say the fact that Larson is in talks at all is reason enough to suspect Marvel's no more or less ageist than any other production house, seeing as she's at the very least in the ballpark of what they're looking for.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. To be fair, MCU Captain America's military rank is a stage name he got to keep as an honorary title after dashing off and rescuing Barnes's unit. Even if her rank is downplayed, Danvers can still retain a stronger military credential than Cap did during adaptation by virtue of having any actual position in the U.S. Air Force.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. What late stage? They don't even have a director yet. Or a complete script.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I don't like how issues over Hollywood casting trends in practice work out as hostility toward individual actors and (probably more often) actresses.
However, I would have to admit that even accounting for the tendency of older actors to play younger characters and being older than their female counterparts, Larson is rather young.
The character is an Experienced Protagonist. Although canonically she's in a relationship with Rhodes, it does seem unlikely that there would be an actress as old as Don Cheadle, who is 51. However, you'd think at least they could get someone around the age of Anthony Mackie- 37- to fit the concept of a youngish officer.
And while there's no guarantee that the MCU will have Captain Marvel IN SPACE, and Star Lord is supposed to be a Manchild, I would note that Chris Pratt is 36 and I would expect Carol Danvers to be the same age or older than Peter Quill.

I don't think Carol Danvers is that old in the comics, and certainly wasn't at the start of her story. I know for a fact she became a colonel in the comics at an implausibly young age (before becoming NASA's head of security, also at an implausibly young age).
By the time the Captain Marvel solo movie comes out, Brie Larson will be roughly as old as Chris Evans was when the first Captain America movie came out. So her age wouldn't be unprecedented for an MCU hero in their introductory film.
I mean, let's be honest, Larson is being considered only mostly because of ageism.
You can't deny having the Russo brothers in charge has something to do with it.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Briefly. She was Abed's love interest who got Brother Chucked rather quickly.

I can, actually. She's a very in-demand actress after winning that Oscar.

Carol is roughly the same age as Natasha. both are currently around their mid 40s. If you discount retcons and all the weird bullshit that attempts to fit characters into the 10 year timeline (since the Fantastic Four’s fateful flight, anyone's history always, retroactively, started ten or thirteen years ago), she would be born 1938 but joins the airforce in 1956 then leaves for the CIA in 1963 only to become a member of NASA in 1967. Rogue was only 9 when Carol busted out of Lubyanka. However around 50-60s her ageing slowed down due to Mar-vel. Obviously he came with significant physiological improvements.
If we go by the 10 year timeline, Uncanny X-Men #164 said Carol saw Apollo launch as a teenager. That implies she was born in the 50s. Then in Marvel volume 2 issue 25, young adult Carol is at Cape Canaveral where a space shuttle is involved (obviously 80s). This implies she was born in the late 60s. Etc

I got Alison Brie confused with Brie Larson.
Whoops.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.I'm still pulling for the Steve/Sharon ship to die in a fire and never be spoken of again.
