Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

That's quite the cast.
EDIT: Felt this was worth posting here.

I'm sure someone in the Marvel Universe has enough evil exes that I could make a joke.
Forever liveblogging the Avengers
Well, Tony Stark goes canonically have two exes (Christine and Maya, three if you count Cap) went against him...

Someone needs to write that dialogue into a Punisher comic.
And to my utter lack of surprise, we have push back against the possibility of Ms. Larson, an Oscar winner, for the most pathetic reasons.
"She's not tall enough"
"She doesn't look like a badass"
"She's too young" Even though Carol is pretty young for a colonel.
"Gina Carano would have been better".
Not unlike the stupidity Gal Gadot went through.
Humorously, my dad's also used the "Not tall enough" argument.....in regards to Don Cheadle. Terrence Howard could at least pull the physique of an experienced army man, while Cheadle looks a tad too scrawny. His performance does help a lot though.
Also, it's a bit disingenuous to say "It also had the Punisher!" in regards to the MCU. The vegan cop was played by Thomas Jane, who was in The Punisher (2004).

"She doesn't look like a badass."
- rubs nose*
Yes, I'm sure the lead actress of Short Term 12 and Room is completely unable to convey strength and general kickassery. (Seriously, I know they are not genre movies, but... come on, fandom.)
Every time someone says Punisher, I now think of Jon Bernthal. Took me a moment to remember Thomas Jane played him before.

The point was that three actors so far have been in superhero movies, not that they were in the MCU. Superman also has yet to enter the MCU, though if WB's movies continue receiving the reception they've had, a deal might just be around the corner....
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. She's younger than I would prefer, and Hollywood yet again casting firmly within-type (yet another 20-something actress, how predictable). And Hollywood's blatant double-standard in this regard annoys me. And I'm not ashamed to admit that, nor consider it to be an "unreasonable" one.
That said, I think that Larson herself would do a good job acting-wise.

Some fans consider it unconventional, but I believe that the decision to have Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson play MCU Robin is guaranteed to be a stellar performance.
Honestly, hard to say. Bernthal is definitely the best Punisher since Jane. Whether he's better than Jane, I really can't tell.

This happens with every casting choice, especially ones who have very devoted fanbases. Nobody is as good as whoever they had in their head.
The only one I can sorta see is the one about her being young. But honestly? I wouldn't be surprised if they greatly shortened her backstory anyway. Comic Carol was a soldier, a pilot, a CIA agent, and depending on the continuity also a SHIELD or SWORD agent before she ever became a superhero. They'll probably cut most of that down.
If The One-Above-All were to appear in the MCU, how would you handle it?
@Punisher 286 she'll be very close to 30 by the time the movie comes out. Assuming she gets the role.
Or that. I was thinking it'd be neat to get Jack Kirby to play him but then I googled it and the man's been dead for twenty years so Stan Lee is my standby.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.To be honest, I would be worried about the (possible!!!) casting if not for the fact that Bree Larson is a real chameleon. I haven't seen that much of her, but so far she has practically be the female version of Gary Oldman, meaning that I am usually unable to recognize her in any role. Consequently I can see her selling more or less everything.
Concerning the age: Marvel should cast as young as it is believable in any role, especially for roles which require a lot of physicality, because the idea behind a casting like this is that the actors should be around for a couple of movies. In Captain Marvel's case that most likely means that the actress the cast now should still be a believable hero when the end of Phase 5 happens.

Wow. I didn't even realize Superman, Captain America, and the Punisher were in that movie.
Any concern I may have had regarding her role as Envy Adams dried up instantly when you brought that up.
