Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Klaw could always come back too. He's made of sound in the comics, isn't he?
...what?

Comics are weird.

He turns himself into a living being of sound inside of a robot body in the comics.

I always find it funny how people completely fucking jump the gun with any new bit of news on the works pages for MCU stuff.

I feel like I wanna yell "Chill" at some of the edits.

[up][up][up]I was hoping for someone older, but she's not bad.

[up]Probably all the people who add tropes assuming that once a character or element from the comics has been confirmed that everything else about it must also hold true.

I remember that the Civil War page ended up getting edited to say the plot would have Real SHIELD in it after Agents of SHIELD revealed them.

[up][up][up]Just general stuff like people putting rumors or plot theories as given facts. Like one related to an easter egg in GOTG which someone apparently felt was proof to definitively state Wonder Man is in the movie and joins the team, or literally anything to do with Infinity War.

[up][up]Yup.

Jennifer Kent, the director of The Babadook, is said to be one of the candidates to direct.

Brie Larson is the frontrunner to play Captain Marvel.

Seems plausible enough and Variety isn't the worst source. But at this point I've seen so many reports "revealing" who is playing Captain Marvel is that I'm not going to believe it 100% until Marvel announces it.

Now assuming this is accurate, then I think it's also reasonably safe to assume that we aren't going to have to wait for her solo film for the character to be introduced into the MCU. There's no real point in casting the character before a director is signed on unless she's going to appear in an earlier movie.

And given her backstory in the USAF and NASA, it's very easy for her to organically fit into the narrative of any Earthbound movie. I've often toyed around with the idea that she gets wrapped up in the events of Infinity War: Part 1 (thus setting her on the path to becoming Captain Marvel) simply because they need a kickass pilot.

The Russos already let slip that she'd be in the first Infinity War before her solo film.

[up][up][up]I've only seen the short film which was then developed and expanded into Babadook, but judging on that alone, she's definitely an interesting director. I'd be curious what she could do with a superhero narrative.

Brie Larson would be cool, too.

[up]She's doing a movie about Australian colonialsm as well, so it sounds like she has a diverse skill set as a director.

Klaw, even without the whole "made out sound" thing, generally has pretty effective sonic weaponry that he could use (though on the other hand MCU Klaue doesn't seem the kind of guy to invent something extravagant and flashy, let alone use it over far more practical bullets).

Good. I actually like Brie Larson. I don't get why everyone wants Emily Blunt to be Captain Marvel.

Just like Asa was the forerunner for Spider-man?

Until anything is definitely announced, I won't care. Not that I care anyway. While I am partial of Kathrine Winneck, I would be okay with more or less any casting as long as it isn't Emily Blunt.

Nope. Variety is an actual, reputable source, and The Hollywood Reporter (another one) is reporting the same thing as well.

I actually like Brie Larson. I don't get why everyone wants Emily Blunt to be Captain Marvel.

I don't think Blunt is a bad choice by any means but I don't know why a lot of media sites built her up as though she were the choice.

Of course. We've seen it happen before with the likes of Michael Keaton (though he did come back later). I'm merely saying there's a lot more fire to this than there was with Asa Butterfield, which was largely a bunch of hit-or-miss comic book film sites pulling stuff out of their asses.

Good. Good actress.

I only know her as Envy Adams from Scott Pilgrim, which probably isn't the best role to judge her from because everything in that movie is deliberately trippy.

But I'm liking the sound of the words, "won an Oscar."

This just made me realize that if she is Captain Marvel she'd be the fourth Scott Pilgrim cast member to be in a superhero movie the others being Brandon Routh, Chris Evans and Thomas Jane.
