Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

To be fair, "The Death of Captain America" was also a gimmick, but it was also a good story. One does not preclude the other.

I still remember when they killed off Human Torch, the writer at the time said something to the effect of "Oh yeah, some other guy down the line is totally gonna bring him back, but that's later. I wanna work with this direction now."

Oh, absolutey. Gimmicks don't have to be bad. Superior Spider-Man's another one and, like this, people absolutely despised it and thought it was the worst thing you could conceivably do to the character. But now that the story's over, the outrage is dying down.

Problem is, Marvel's becoming heavily dependent on outrage marketing. Under Joey Q., their thing seemed to be throwing whatever shit people come up with at a page and not caring whether it meshes with the shared universe or not. With Axel Alonso, their thing has become, "Ha! This is going to piss off SO MANY PEOPLE. Let's do it!"

Superior Spider-Man. Avengers Arena. Superior Iron Man. Blowing up the Multiverse. Poisoning all the mutants. Depowering Captain America. Etc. etc.

Under his reign, there have been great strides towards progressive representation but given his pattern, I can't help but wonder if things like "Sam Wilson as Captain America" or "Female Thor" were done to ragebait too, rather than out of a genuine desire to see more diverse roles.

When Gordon became Batman for a little bit not long ago, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo were also very forward about the fact that it was a temporary change.

Status Quo Is God is on the whole a bad thing for comics but it does have the advantage that momentously stupid things have a good chance of being retconned or otherwise undone.

Regarding Spider-Man vs Winter Soldier I don't know if he was pulling punches or was just stunned senseless at Spider-Man but he doesn't punch him immediately when he could when Spidey is admiring his robot arm.

Yeah just be honest about it. The Smarts are already all aware this is just a cheap attention-grabber and angry about Marvel's desperation and acting like the charade can't be seen through, and the Marks who don't know how the comic biz works are too busy getting outraged, sending death threats, and trying to boycott the series for it to be beneficial from a business level either.

[up][up] I think he's stunned. He's mowed his way through basically every fighter he's encountered except for Cap for basically two movies now, and here comes this goof-ass clown kid who just stops his punch like it isn't even a thing. You can just see the gears in his head going "This isn't how this works."

If I remember right, Marvel's got more female characters front-running than basically anyone else right now. Even if it's just "ragebait", at least it's had a positive outcome. Better unintentional progress than no progress at all.

[up] I have to watch the scene again (mostly because it's so awesome), but I think Spidey not only stops the punch but pulls it up to look at the metal arm. That shit just doesn't happen.

This was the first movie that got every aspect of Peter right. The humor, the heart, the costume, and yes, the physicality of his abilities. He spends the entire time being so fast and so strong that he basically shit-slaps vastly more experienced combatants while he never stops talking, like the fight is his third-biggest focus.

Yeah.

Spidey is basically Marvel's Superman. He's the guy who can do anything and you can use him in just about every role and in any story. The key difference is that where Superman is the best there is at everything, for Spidey, it's the combination.

He's not the strongest guy in Marvel's stable. Or the fastest. Or the smartest. There are better gadgets and tougher powers and stuff out there. He's not even the talkiest character, that honor goes to Deadpool. In any given category, there's a hundred characters who completely outclass him.

What makes him so capable is the way it all comes together. His speed, his strength, his gadgets, his intelligence, and a bit of precognition thrown into the mix for good measure result in a character that generally has an answer for just about anything you throw at him. He can't outpunch the Hulk but he can dodge his blows easily enough. He can't outpace Quicksilver but he can outsmart him. He can't outwit Tony Stark but he hits like a tank missile.

Part of it's the shilling he's gotten over the years, but there's a reason he's Marvel's flagship character and it's a lot of fun getting to see him finally play in the sandbox with everyone else.

This edit of Winter Soldier + Deadpool + The Avengers etc amuses me.

Oh man, if Disney can get a deal with Fox and have Deadpool in MCU for a bit, it would make me a happy person.

I've more or less said the same thing myself. In fact, you said pretty much everything I've wanted to say (or probably said earlier in the thread).

You thief! I'll sue!tongue

And I should note that most of those situations you're talking about are when he's in a good mood. Take all that shit, and throw in a Spidey who's angry...who wants to hurt you, even kill you...

And then you've got a very scary guy.

The really bad part is that most guys who fight him don't know that, so they never realize how bad an idea it is to piss him off until it's far too late.

He's got a pretty unique, marketable look with a bunch of potential for accessories.

I can't see anyone wanting to make that. It also kind of clashes with the entire point of the character. She's supposed to not be like the other heroes in the MCU.

I wouldn't want her marketed in her jewel outfit either. The show has Jessica deliberately mock it.

Also once again, there's nothing at this point indicating there won't be any Jessica Jones figures at all. There's any number of reasons they went with Daredevil and the Punisher first.

I would be happy to see Jessica Jones merchandise. But not toys. Please, not toys. Parents don't need to be buying Kilgrave dolls for their 6-year-old.

Well, Hot Toys aren't really aimed at kids. They're so expensive I can't imagine a parent buying one for their kid, even if their kid is a huge superhero fan.

I had a kind of interesting idea for a fic. Basic premise: Cap is able to stop the Red Skull's deathplane without taking an icebath, comes home after the war. Then what?

He works with Howard and Peggy for the early formation of SHIELD. Finds out Zola is going to be a part, is adamantly against it. "Zola walks or I do." In the end, they pick Steve over Zola. Peggy is grievously injured in a field assignment, Steve gives Peggy a blood transfusion that also happens to impart some of the Super Soldier formula into Peggy's bloodstream, giving her similar abilities to Steve. She gets a costume shoved onto her and, while originally resentful of it, comes to enjoy her callsign: Golden Girl.

As the years passed, Steve and Peggy would encounter people like Namor, The Whizzer and Ant Man and The Wasp. They would keep in contact with these folks and eventually develop a team, while Steve also takes a young man named Nicholas Fury under his wing while being both Captain America and director of SHIELD.

That's about as far as I've gotten. >.>
