Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Given how much I love Age of Ultron, reading the early 2270s pages is infuriating that I can't lend my two cents.

It's okay to have minor opinion. I for once love Cap 1 and Ant-Man more than most people do.

I don't think "likes Age of Ultron" is a minor opinion. I think those who hate AOU (or dislike it a lot) are firmly in the minority.

Yeah, the opinion that Age of Ultron is a fantastic movie is unpopular HERE, in this thread, but overall, it seems to be shared by the majority.

Most people just see it as a flawed but enjoyable film.

I mean, what's not to like about it? Quicksilver, for a character pretty much introduced only to die, was pretty good, Hawkeye gets time to shine, Ultron's actor is pretty good, Vision is amazing, and the action is alright.

It's just that the flaws are...ugh. The bad things about it are frustrating.

Same. I personally found it decent but with some glaring flaws and a step down from the first movie, but overall still not a bad film. Reddit seems to like it for the most part, to the point you have more threads talking about how overblown the hate is than actual hate. 4Chan can be vitriolic in their bashing of it but don't seem to actually hate it, not to the same level they do the Thor films. Tumblr hates it to a fanatical, almost bandwagoning level to the point the few people I've seen admitting they enjoyed it on the whole got sent hate for it. While my Chinese friend tells me the reception on social media networks there is similarly middling (it's not the worst but it's not great either and a disappointment after the previous few films).

Depends on what part of Tumblr you're looking on, I guess. Keep in mind that the crazy fangirl part of Tumblr is pretty vocal, and they pretty much hate Age of Ultron for reasons both logical (Whedon's writing of Black Widow) to illogical (Hawkeye having a wife).

By the way, you guys ranked the MCU movies a while back. Here's my list:

1. Avengers Age Of Ultron (10.9/10)

2/3. Captain America Civil War/ Avengers (9.5-10/10)

4. Iron Man 3 (9.2/10)

5. Captain America The Winter Soldier (9.0/10)

6. Guardians Of The Galaxy (8.8/10)

7. Ant Man (8.5/10)

8. Thor The Dark World (8.2/10)

9. Iron Man (8.0/10)

10. Captain America The First Avenger (7.6/10)

11. Iron Man 2 (7.0/10)

12. Thor (6.8/10)

13. The Incredible Hulk (6.3/10)

All higher than average (5/10)

Yep, that's it. It's not that it wasn't good, it's just that the flaws were obvious and mostly simple to fix. They don't kill the movie, they just leave a sour taste.

I mean, I watch the film anytime it's on (if there's not much else to watch), and I still find it enjoyable. The flaws in it are still horrid, though.

Basically, Avengers was Buffy Season 3, while Age of Ultron was Buffy Season 4. Still good, but just with glaring mistakes.

I just call it "the second best Avengers film ever made".

I greatly enjoyed it despite its flaws, but the first one was just a masterpiece.

Ya know, it'd be cool if, before Infinity War Part 2 comes out to end Phase 3, we arrange some kind of stream of everything from the MCU, from the movies to the TV shows to the One-Shots. It'd be a lot, but it'd be fun too.

So, I have two hypothetical questions. First, if they hadn't gone with the Civil War storyline, what would Cap 3 have been about?

Second, Sebastian Stan seemed to be maybe semi-seriously lobbying for a Winter Soldier solo movie. If we ignore certain logistics (what movie would get pushed back in the process, how would it fit into the MCU timeline, etc), What could that movie cover? The two year gap between Cap 2 & 3? His time with HYDRA (I think that would be interesting because I kinda feel like there was always more going on in his head than anybody realized, and I want to see how that would fit together with how they dealt with him. Did he know he had holes in his mind? Did he think that was strange? How did he view himself compared to the people around him?)? Some time in the future?

Would've had more emphasis on Cap and Falcon searching for Bucky, probably more time explaining what exactly he was doing those last two years and a proper exploration of his character rather than reducing him to a bit of a damsel, a less anticlimactic reunion with Cap than "hey, you know me right? k gotta go stop Zemo", and more development to Sharon whose actress signed onto the film before it became Civil War. Apparently that revelation of what Bucky did at the very end of the film would've still held true regardless, and was the necessary piece that allowed them to frankenstein the greater Civil War plot in.

I feel like, now that I've had time to think it over a bit, that might've been a better movie. Civil War is a greater achievement than The Winter Soldier when you consider all the places it could've gone wrong. But as a standalone film it lacked the latter's clarity, due to literally being a chimera of two separate movies, joined together neater than they had any right to, but you can spot the seams, and which would've been better developed as independent films. In hindsight considering BvS's poor reception the need to jump into Civil War was probably premature from a storytelling standpoint.

I feel like the reveal that Bucky killed Tony's parents would've had MUCH less impact if the main antagonist wasn't Iron Man.

I don't know when exactly RDJ signed on and whether he was going to be in it before it became Civil War, but we do know his role was originally going to be much smaller. It's possible he would've still been around in the pre-Civil War script. As it turned out the final film was his best showing with a great performance from RDJ and the film did a lot to clean up his characterization post-IM3 and AOU, but given that he's already seen as a Spotlight-Stealing Squad in the greater MCU I can understand why people are a little resentful that he basically took away from characters who arguably could've used or deserved higher priority with the screentime.

Who knows. Civil War opens up so many possibilities in Phase 3, it just feels right to me. After all the script writers said that they kind of naturally ended up with a version of Civil War once they realized all the implications of their take on Bucky's story. And honestly, adding Civil War into the mix is not something I would have changed. What I would have changed is the editing. I think the movie doesn't linger long enough on the more emotional scenes and has the bad habit of cutting from one persons face to another during them. It's not bad enough to ruin the movie, but I feel that it takes away a little bit from the emotional impact some of the scenes have.

But, well, nitpicks. As it is, I consider Got G and The Winter Soldier better than Civil war, because those movies are tighter written overall, and have a better pacing, but Civil War (and the first Avengers) is right behind.

Place 5 is Cap 1 btw. I love that movie.

Uh, if we're doing all that then:
1. GotG
2. Civil War
3. Winter Soldier
4. Avengers
5. Avengers 2: Rise of Ultron
6. Ant Man
7. Iron Man
8. Captain America
9. Thor
10. Iron Man 2
11. Iron Man 3
12. The Incredible Hulk
13. Thor 2

I consider them all to be good movies, with all of them above Thor as great movies.
