Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Anthony Mackie says he tried out for a bunch of parts he didn't get in the MCU. He joked that he was so desperate that he would have taken a gig as a random bystander who yells "Thor, hit that guy!"

It's a trend for a lot of different things. Sean Schemmel initially auditioned to play Vegeta before being cast as Goku, and Shelby Rabara initially auditioned for Garnet before being cast as Peridot.

He apparently wanted to play a villain (I don't know for certain if he was gonna be Vegeta), and didn't even know who Goku was until he got the role.

That's why they only auditioned. They didn't get the roles for a reason.

Fucking hell, Tom Selleck auditioned for Indiana Jones. Just imagine Magnum PI as Indy.

Again, that's why they only auditioned. That doesn't mean they were likely to get the part, it just means they tried to get the part.

Seems a lot of casting directors like to look for actors to fill supporting roles etc during the auditions for the main characters, which might in turn prompt actors to go for those parts in the first place. For instance, I remember that basically every male early twenties actor who later got some other role on Game Of Thrones auditioned for Jon Snow first (including our very own Iron Fist, Finn Jones).

Moving on from this discussion of auditions, I'm currently rewatching The First Avenger, and damn did I forget how awesome Dum Dum Dugan was.

It would be really funny if they brought Dum Dum Dugan back as an LMD over on Agents of SHIELD. Since he's currently an LMD in the comics, too.

Neal Mc Donough isn't busy, is he? He'd have to have time to grow his mustache out first.

I think next Arrow is his last episode as Damien Darhk. So yeah, they could totally bring him back. It would be hilarious.

Ooh, he and Talbot could have a mustache-off!

What's with the whole "Universal still owning Hulk film rights" thing? I mean, is it really because Hulk 2008 didn't do well compared to Iron Man and the later MCU films?

alliterator Since: Jan, 2001

Universal doesn't own the film rights, they own the distribution rights, I believe. Which they want to keep, since any further movies are bound to make a lot of money.

[up] And how do distribution rights prevent any more Hulk movies?

alliterator Since: Jan, 2001
#57549: May 21st 2016 at 12:38:54 AM

Disney doesn't want to make any film that will be distributed by a company that is not Disney. If they make a Hulk film, it would have to be distributed by Universal. Hence, they will not make a Hulk film.

Basically, Marvel tricked Universal. They bought most of the rights for the Hulk back, but allowed Universal to keep the distribution rights for any movie with Hulk as a lead. Universal thought that this was a good deal, believing that no matter what, they would get their money, since back then shared universes weren't a thing and they thought that every movie involving the Hulk would have the Hulk as a lead...and then Disney bought Marvel, the Avengers happened and Universal was suddenly left in the cold. Disney naturally has no interest in doing a movie they can't distribute themselves. If the Incredible Hulk had been more successful, they might do it nevertheless, but it is the lowest grossing Marvel movie to date, so why bother?
