Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I did not see Jeff Goldblum coming. Nor Karl Urban. Interesting.

Just have Jason Alexander fill in for Jaimie Alexander until she's free again, they have similar names.

I didn't even know that Karl Urban was cast. I haven't seen him in Dredd, but if he was good in that, he might make a good Skurge.
He was incredible, and Dredd is the best comic book movie ever.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

[up][up]He can't play Sif. He has to play Uncle Ben.

I think it's more likely that Valkyrie will be kinda filling in for Sif in the film.

Then Spider-Man would be a very different character.

  • Uncle Ben: Getting bullied is awful, I know. People will try to put you down. They'll say you don't deserve the things you work for. They'll go out of your way to keep you in your place. When they do that, it's your job to stand up, to push back, to show them with every move and every blow why they are wrong. Remember, Peter: with great power comes GREAT respect! Use it fairly but without hesitation and show them why they were wrong to ever doubt you.

Jeff Goldblum and Karl Urban are awesome casting, and the characters that they're playing are, not what I would have expected. Nice to see Cate Blanchett (the Marvel films first female main villain, pretty please) and Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie finally) confirmed as well.

And yeah, hopefully Sif appears as well.

I'm really curious about the outfits they'll go with with for Valkyrie and Hela, since Hela tends to wear very... elaborate outfits, and there was a fair amount of concept art already done up for Valkyrie in the early stages of The Dark World's development.

Random rambling.

In my country's airing of Iron Man 3, the subtitler actually failed to recognize Bruce Banner and made the subtitles as if he was a therapist with Stark being his client.

So I was like "Wow, what kind of therapist was he to be personally invited to Stark's plac-waaaaait a minute..." [lol]

Well the concept art that came with the official announcement seems to point to Hela looking very comic book accurate (even her ridiculous head gear). I can see them ditching the boob armor that Valkyrie often wears in the comics.

This was the concept art done of Valkyrie for The Dark World.

I'm guessing something along those lines just ya know, black.

And hopefully without the goofy boob plate. Sif's Dark World costume toned it down well enough.

So I wonder what the Grandmaster's role will be. Maybe he has the final Infinity Stone? (I'm assuming the Time Stone will be in Doctor Strange).

I wonder if they managed to lock Blanchet down to a multiple picture deal...

So, since I am lazy, anyone ready to explain who the Grandmaster and the other characters are and what are the most interesting stories involving them? And are they in the Ragnarok Comic?

He's actually more connected to Marvel Cosmic. For example, he and The Collector (BDT's character from GOTG) have history. And this would seem to fit the idea that this film will set-up Infinity War in some way.

I've seen it theorized that they might be folding Hela and Death into a single character. If that's correct, then she would appear in at least one part of Infinity War, probably both.

So if the Grandmaster is popping up, I hope they adapt this scene from Avengers Annual #16 when we get to Infinity War.

That, for all you Hawkeye critics, is Clint saving the entire universe by outsmarting said Grandmaster with a simple game of chance (he'd imprisoned Death, and losing to Clint distracted him long enough for her to escape...at least I think it's death).

And they say the guy is boring. BULLSHIT! BULLSHIT I SAY!

I suggested the Time Stone is in Strange because the way the Eye is described makes it sound like that.

Strange is also helped by an amulet known as The Eye of Agamotto. “The Cloak of Levitation [and] the Eye of Agamotto are his two signature pieces,” says Feige. “In this film, the Eye is a very important relic that can be quite dangerous if used in the wrong hands, because it has the ability to do any number of things, the most dangerous of which is, it can sort of manipulate probabilities. Which is also another way of saying, ‘screw around with time’ — which is part of our story.”

So just like how the Tesseract hid the Space Stone, the Aether Reality, and the scepter Mind, I'm thinking the Eye of Agamotto has the Time Stone inside.

Also, I'm thinking Grandmaster is how Hulk gets involved. We've been trying to figure out why Hulk would be in Thor movie. Perhaps after the events of Age of Ultron, the Grandmaster kidnapped Hulk to force him to fight in his arena battles.

I like Hawkeye.

Partially because of stuff like that and partially because he's a fuckup the other 90% of his life. He's very endearing and relatable.

I don't even find him boring in the MCU. He's less of an ass and he's way more low key than in the comics but he still gets some great bits.

Hawkeye was super boring in Thor and The Avengers, but Age of Ultron fixed that a lot.

Hawkeye was barely in Thor to count towards anything other than confirming he exists.
