Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

They adapt one of the worst comic book event ever and turn it into a super hyped movie.

Because the problem with Civil War was less with the idea behind it and more with the execution. Whereas the very concept of the Marcus story is just flat out fucked.

Not to mention that there was just an entire show exploring this kind of abuse....

Took the words out of my mouth (keyboard?). Even the plot was played seriously, it would essentially be a repeat of Jessica Jones, albeit with arguably worse abuse.

Just an FYI, but if anyone wants a more indepth look at Avengers #200 that's actually pretty darn funny to boot, Linkara did a video on it for his review series Atop the Fourth Wall, which is all about reviewing (mostly) bad comics, Avengers #200 included. Here it is, in case a summary of the whole fiasco isn't enough for you.

They did mention the Yellow Jacket and turn that idea into a villain.

Hank Pym existed as Yellowjacket way before the slapping incident. Having the name is not in itself a reference to the time he beat up his wife.

Hey, just got home after watching Civil War with my sister.

Man, I need some R and R, before I take it up with the spoilers thread, but the point is...

I know I'd be willing to defend Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but holy crap, Civil War was just so much fucking better. grin

So John Boyega could possibly be the next person to join the cast of Black Panther. It's just a rumor for now, but I hope it pans through.

Regarding Avengers #200, I don't think anyone who wants Captain Marvel to be good wants it to be adapted in any meaningful sense, so there's no reason to even argue the point. Well there's probably a weirdo or two out there somewhere, but I believe even the writers of Avengers #200 have admitted that it was terrible.

So when I said I want the movie to take a jab at it, I mean I want them to reference less the comic itself and more the absolute terribleness of it. I'm taking something like having a bit character named after the writer of Avengers #200 and is then immediately killed off in a humiliating fashion.

EDIT—

Why is it that between the time I write up my final thoughts on a point of contention, the topic always radically changes between the time I start writing it and when I actually post it?

That's some cross-promotion there, Disney.

[up][up] I think everything that needs to be said about Avengers #200 has already been said, so I don't see what good could come from referencing here. Just let it die.

Could be, but I hope that despite being unshackled from Perlmutter giving them more room to do All Star Casts, that Marvel continues to do what it has with Hemsworth, Bautista, and Olsen and hire actors who haven't been blown to stardom in the same way Boyega has yet as major characters too.

Pretty much all of the names that've been floated around for BP have been sort of big, like Dr. Strange's. It's great that they're hiring so much talent together, but it's also a great opportunity to get some fresh blood into Hollywood as well.

Sure, now, but that doesn't mean Marvel Studios hired a big-name actor for the role.

I'd heard of him from the two biopics he did, having watched both of them and loved his performances in them (especially in Get On Up).

Changing topics a bit, Agents of SHIELD is gonna be moved to a later time slot next season. A lot of people are getting pissed about it because the ratings have been really bad due to the election, and now they'll probably get worse.

This is why I'm really hoping they don't contradict the show in the future. You have this entire area of your universe that you claim is "all connected", and you're just gonna dump it to the wayside?
