Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Uh.
In terms of completely disrespectful treatment and busing a character, you could argue Disassembled for what it does to Scarlet Witch. Probably took longer to make her a viable character again.
Avengers #200 was probably worse overall though. It has very little value as a story.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersVery true.
This one honestly bothered me more than the Pym incedent given it nearly resulted in two people dying. Hell, Peter strikes MJ in Spider-Man 3 while possessed by the Symbiote and yet people had more of a problem with him dancing like a moron. For them that was the reason he needed to get rid of it.
One good thing I can say about Avengers 200 was that it lead to Chris Claremont calling out the Avengers and by proxy the idiots who let that story get made in Avengers Annual 10.

Oh god, if they Continuity Nod it by giving her an ex-boyfriend named Marcus, I might vomit right there in the theater.
Hitting MJ was a way of demonstrating that he's gone off the deep end. It's presented as the ultimate consequence for Peter indulging in the symbiote and sets up the conflict that leads into him getting rid of it. Mind you, it plays into an uncomfortable Patriarchal trend that needs to die - hurting women so that men can undergo Character Development - but the point is that it punishes the characters for Peter's choices.
Peter dancing like a moron punishes the audience for Peter's choices and, unlike MJ, he never tried to make amends with us over it.

The only way I could see them going down that road is if she has a close friend in the movie (dare I say Monica Rambeau?) that helped her get out of a bad relationship in the past.
But I think the best route would just be of the "punch someone named Marcus" variety.

I vote for ignoring it. Ignoring it is the best way to handle it. It does not deserve a mention.

Exactly!
The point of a Shout-Out is to acknowledge the other work and go, "Hey, that thing exists and it's cool. If you caught my mention, maybe check it out!"
The last thing Marvel's first female super-lead needs in her movie is a reference to that time her character got raped in the comics and everyone was okay with it. Even if it's tongue-in-cheek, it has no place in this film.
