Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I've seen that comparison around. Tis an amusing coincidence.

If Bucky hadn't always been called that, I would have said that they planned it that way...

To be fair, who the hell names their kid after the single worst US President?

I've literally never heard of that happening with Confederate sympathizers.

Neither have I, but you asked, so I thought I'd theorize, and they were the only people who I thought might like the man.

I've been wondering: what would have happened if Deadpool joined Civil War?

To start with, it would no longer be a Civil War. evil grin

There are several James Buchanan schools. Soon or later every other school has already taken the cool President names.

Apparently even Southerners hate Buchanan. Bucky's parents were jerks.

I'd like to believe that after Civil War, Vision's no longer worthy.

I'd still love to see Bill in Thor Ragnarok.

You know what this Civil War has in common with the American Civil War? James Buchanan started both.

I did not know there was a real James Buchanan. Goes to show I need to brush up on my history.

Came right before Abe Lincoln and considered to be one of the worst presidents in US history. Incidentally also widely believed to be asexual or gay.

His strategy with dealing with the oncoming war was pretty much "never mind all that". It bit him in the ass when Dredd Scott got ruled legally as property and not a person in Scott v Sanford.

Wow.

What were Bucky's parents thinking?

Guess they wanted him to be the most hated man in America one way or another.

Buchanan also apparently was an incompetent idiot in his past political jobs involving diplomacy. The only reason why he was elected was because he was out of the country when Franklin Pierce fucked things up with Kansas-Nebraska (and to be fair to Pierce, he was a better Congressman than a President, and he was dealing with a lot of emotional turmoil due to watching his son get decapitated in a train wreck on the way to the inauguration).

Yeah, Pierce wasn't a good President, but he at least had a lot of shit going on in his life that made it that way. Buchanan was just a fucking idiot.

[up][up]

Things tend to get lost in the whole secession and Civil War issues. Either way, Pierce only signed the law leading to Bleeding Kansas after coercion from the guy behind it, Stephen Douglas, aka that really short guy Lincoln ran against in Congress and for the Presidency (and he was really short).
