Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Nah, he watched the actual Cap movies. Everyone tends to aim for center mass, so Cap shields there pretty easily.

And then Cap won anyway.

Now that I think about it, Bucky was the only one to aim a potentially lethal attack at Spidey. Fortunately for both of them, the Spider Sense was subtly implied to be used there.

As long as Cap continues the long tradition of stealing cars in his movies, we are good.

Thor's hammer increases his mass when someone unworthy tries to pick him up, right? This is why Hulk damaged floor trying to pick him up. And we know that Vision can change density of objects, since he turned intangible while wearing clothing. I'm not saying anything, but the bot might be cheating.

I thought AOU already had a good enough explanation: the worthiness clause doesn't apply to him because he's not actually a person.

He's a sentient version of the coat hook.

[up] I think the official explanation is that just having been born he had no imperfections.

He can't pick it up now because he's begun to think and feel and make mistakes.

I thought it was established that the coat hook was worthy, having dried the King Coat in Hiding for no reason other than hospitality.

[up] Wait what?

I wonder if anyone's put together gifs of Simba crying over Mufasa and T'Challa crying over his dad yet. Probably on Tumblr by now.

I get that it's iconic, but why does Fury still have the eyepatch with him as of AOU, given that he hurled it into that fire he started at the end of Winter Soldier?

The Vision hammer thing being a loophole or trick completely ruins the point of the scene and Tony and Steve's wounded ego conversation at the end

Y'know, as great as it was seeing Vision picking up Mjölnir (especially since it eliminated the whole "should we trust him" thing that would've happened), it does mean that we probably won't be getting Beta Ray Bill in the MCU.

If we do, then they're gonna have to completely redo his introduction, since he was the first being besides Thor to pick up Mjölnir, which was a shock to readers at the time. Wouldn't be so shocking now that the Vision did it first.

I really don't see Beta Ray Bill getting in either.

We're probably missing Odin and he was a big part of the saga

There's been some Flip-Flop of God about whether or not Odin is dead or just being held captive somewhere.

Did Odin die in the comics at any point?

All the gods died pre-Civil War due to some ragnaroking

Ragnaroking tends to do that.

Did they stay dead?

I saw someone make this joke on Doug Walker's Facebook, so credit to that person for it:

You know what this Civil War has in common with the American Civil War? James Buchanan started both.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
