Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up]Ah. Yeah, makes no sense, then.

[up][up][up]Even if T'Challa only keeps Bucky in his freezer, his subjects are hardly going to be thrilled. That's bound to cause trouble.

Especially with that... colorful history, some of which may have involved legitimate attacks against Wakandan citizens.

Maybe Klaw will show up to stir the pot some if Wakanda really does get a bit uneasy about Bucky being there.

[up]x4 I get the feeling Bucky's presence in Wakanda isn't going to be something the general population knows about. And even if it did, Bucky hasn't committed any crimes against Wakanda that we know of, Hydra brainwashing or not (we don't even know if Hydra ever made incursions into Wakanda). And Zemo being T'Chaka's true killer became a matter of public record at the end of Civil War.

However I don't see why they would have a problem with it. Any radical isolationists might not like it, but it wouldn't be personal.

[up]Because Bucky is still the winter soldier, who is wanted is almost all contry for to many crime to count(including the death of Stark) and hinding for the general public is the kind of shaddy thing you expect for the CIA, no king of wakandaevil grin

You do realize this is the kind of thing you should be talking about in the spoiler thread, right?

In fact, a really cool way to homage the original concept while not falling into the Unfortunate Implications, would be to have him brag about once fighting and killing a White Ape himself and then took its skin, as a way of proving his strength and ability to take action or something while accusing T'Challa of being weak and complacent. We could even see the skin on his wall at some point, if we see M'Baku's home or office or something.

I like that. I think it works quite well. I hope they go for that. Then again, Marvel has (Dare Devil season 2 aside) been pretty good at avoiding racist caricatures.

Then again, that didn't help Iron Man 3, but that movie 's biggest crime (to me) is wasting Ben Kingsley. There must have been better things they could have done with him.

That's pretty consistent with my interpretation of it.

My belief was that they decided that Phase 3 should end with Infinity War: Part 2, and if they were going to do Inhumans in Phase 4 it should be released when it makes the most sense for Phase 4.

Avoid caricatures, sure. Not avoiding criticism for that character.

[up][up] Yeah, I was kind of stunned how many outlets claimed it was "cancelled", when it seemed pretty obvious to me that it just didn't fit in Phase 3 anymore. Though I don't necessarily expect it to be the first movie in Phase 4 either...something is going on behind the scenes. Let's be frank, if Marvel actual gets their hands on the F4 rights, it might make more sense to start with them and let them discover the Inhumans in order to create some early interest in those characters.

IW 2 should end the this first mega arc of the MCU. the inhumans, royal family, in a inhuman movie are reluctant and passive anyway, not appearing unless they really need to rather than want to. unless thanos or kree attack alatian then it doesnt make a lot of sense. would kinda take away the impact of IW 2

Yeah, I was quite surprised and honestly confused when it was announced as the closer for Phase 3 over Infinity War, which is why I can believe the rumors it was only included as a bargaining chip for Captain Marvel.

Oh, I can believe that it was a bargaining chip, but that doesn't make it a bad idea down the line. Like the Got G, the Inhumans have the potential to become a successful franchise, if handled right.

[up] word is that Perlmutter really, really wanted Inhumans (as replacement for the X-men) but was really, really against female lead movies.
