Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

At least they noted it in the comments.

Cap had how many friends named James?

At least you guys can pretend the show ended at season 1, where I assume it has a much more conclusive ending.

The first season does conclude the arc of Peggy getting over Steve's death and earning respect in her workplace, but the second season's timeframe appeared to have retconned what was previously suggested to be the series' ending, the Agent Carter short where she gets the SHIELD offer.

Oh yeah, and the first season also teases a bit about how Zola got into power and created his computer self and Winter Soldier.

They better find a way to continue this. Hopefully with a comic.

I can't say I wasn't expecting this.

It was a small miracle the Agent Carter even got a second season, and when the second season got weaker ratings then the first (without primary coverage as an explanation like Ao S has), plus with the lead actress getting cast on a different show, a cancellation was all but inevitable.

And to be honest I didn't really like Season 2 as much as I wanted to. Far too much of it's plot either went unresolved or didn't have a satisfying conclusion. Such as the main villain turning out to be completely delusional in the end instead of having any coherent endgame of her own.

Yeah, I have no idea either why they had Whitney Frost defeated so easily without even an end battle. Did they genuinely think that was a good idea, or was there some kind of budget or exec interference?

As I never saw Agent Carter I have nothing to miss, but I do feel bad for fans of it.

Only watched the first season, and apparently the second season doesn't really have much to tie itself in with the rest of the MCU aside from the Dark Force,

And even then, the Dark Force only ties in to like one episode of AOS, right?

I still hope Cloak and Dagger get a Netflix series... starring me as Cloak. I dunno who I'd want to play Dagger since I'm not usually into blondes, but I'm sure there's a talented actress I could have good (acting) chemistry with out there somewhere.

Do we think it would have been more successful if it did the seasonal time skip thing the fandom was keen on, and spent it's time world building the entire latter half of the MCU's twentieth century?

Cloak and Dagger is getting a Freeform series, unfortunately

Maybe Lance and Bobbi will return to SHIELD now?

If you mean successful as in "better ratings and a third season", probably not as its second season premiere had pitiful ones even with the push of a Captain America 75th anniversary special right before it.

But yeah, I would've liked that. Do its own version of the One Shot, wrap up the Zodiac plot, have 50s Cap and Bucky (was the Zodiac serum what they used?), younger Hank Pym & old Howard like we saw on Ant-Man, and maybe even kid Tony.

The show was always gonna be a hard sell. It had the "It's a Marvel show but without any superheroes" stigma that people hated Season 1 of Agents of SHIELD over, with the added trouble of being a period drama (which are often hard sells on network TV).

Is Damage Control still in development?

This is just my hypothesis, but I get the feeling the bigger turnoff to those who even did tune in the first time was the blatant depiction of prejudice towards women in the 40s. Which in my opinion was completely justified, but you can see why in today's culture where MRAs are a thing, that this would be a hard sell. Which says a whole lot how not-so-different things are.

We might not hear anything on Damage Control for a while. Development cycles can take a long time. We only just this year got an official pick-up for Cloak and Dagger, and that was announced in 2011. Ditto for Jessica Jones, which only started airing in 2015 (I think?) and was announced in 2010.

[up]Well, probably. But there are shows dealing with those issues that manage to find audiences. On the same network they have Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder and Black-Ish, all of which deal with sexism or racism to some degree (with LGBT issues as well in HTGAWM).

Indeed, but their audiences may be very different than the "18-35 PG-13 blockbuster" demographic. Still all my guess, though.

I also wanted to see young T'chaka as well as young Hank and Janet.

I had a headcanon that Janet and Hank proposed the Avengers Initiative as a nuclear deterrent; super people, who may not be able to stop bombs from being dropped, but could punish though who did.

Janet came up with the name.

Which would make it even funnier that Hank hates the Avengers.
