Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I was hoping she would play Shuri rather than a love interest, but the Dora Milaje idea sounds cool. Possibly even Nakia/Malice if they're going to subvert love interest tropes, although there's some problems I have with the Woman Scorned nature of Nakia's character. Although her being a the captain of the royal guard and there being a forbidden love vs duty element (that's not the Widow/Banner crap) could potentially be interesting. At any rate she's probably not Monica Lynne, Early-Bird Cameo Monica Rambeau, or a Storm Expy.

Quill/Gamora was a deliberate subversion of the usually romance trope, so it really doesn't count. And Cap/Sharon has barely started. I can say that after seeing Civil War I am more open to it than beforehand, especially since I really like Sharon. Either way, it depends on what they do with them in the future.
Pepperony is a mixed bag for me.
I remember them arguing over pants.
Otherwise, nothing really stands out since its been so long since I saw the movie.
I doubt we'll get Betty though since I doubt Hulk is going to get his own movie in the foreseeable future.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersPerhaps. In regards to Ragnarok, there was that report that Tessai Thompson's character (who I think will be a version of Valkyrie myself) might end up being Thor's new LI. And now confirmation that Portman is gone makes me wonder about that even more.
Admittedly the interracial romance thing could be really interesting, if it's done well of course.
What's wrong with Lupita playing a love interest to T'challa? I mean, most likely, she's going to be more than just a love interest, but like, considering that most black characters in big franchises are constantly de-sexualized by fandom and not allowed to be seen as love interests for the male/female leads, all of this talk about about "I just want her to be awesome, not a love interest" seems mighty suspicious to me.
The same stuff also applies to Tessa Thompson in Thor: Ragnarok, btw.

I'd like to see Betty show up in Ragnerok. Thinking about it, she and Jane are very similar.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Nothing, I just think Lupita Nyong'o was my top Shuri fancast and that it was this close to happening but didn't. That doesn't mean I secretly have anything against black people and want to desexualize them. Hell the guy who plays T'Challa is a big Mr. Fanservice and it would be a waste not to take advantage of that like they have with Chris Evans and his tiny tiny shirts. You're reading racist undertones into our statements that simply aren't there. Another black actress can play the love interest.
Though in In general I just have romance fatigue with Marvel though because they clearly don't know how to write them well anymore for their white characters either without Strangling them (or maybe they can, but the higher-ups keep forcing them to rush them becaues they think it'll draw people into the seats when it doesn't).

I don't like romance in general, but I think the single worst one in the MCU thus far was the stuff with Daredevil and Karen in season 2. As someone else pointed out, she has more chemistry with an Irish mob goon, a deranged killer vigilante, and a married newspaper editor old enough to be her father than she does Matt.
I wonder if them breaking it off partway through was because even the writers realized it was dumb, or that they planned it to be awkward from the start just so they could then call it off as part of Matt's stupidity with his friends.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!

I think a big part of it is that there tends to be more male characters then female characters, which means there are far fewer major female characters who aren't love interests of some description then the other way around.
On the subject of Lupita Nyong’o's specifically, assuming she is going to break from her preference of playing mo-cap characters, my best guess is that she's in talks to play Black Panther's sister. Which probably renders the entire question moot.

While I can only speak for myself, I'll admit that the reason the Matt/Karen relationship didn't bother me is because I never believed I was supposed to buy into it, and instead was just sitting back and waiting for it to crash and burn.

"Fitzsimmons"
Please, that ships is just misery incarnate, the writer really like to shit on them in a regular basis
" think they tried to set Widow/Hulk in Avenger 1, but they don't have much meaningful interaction beside professional because of the sheer amount of characters and Whedon cares more about smark."
Yeah I can see a present from Nat/Bruce, he is the only person Nat have express something beyond her cold exterior which is something.
"And now Freeman and Cumberbacht are both in the MCU. Mighty Vishnu this is going to hit Superwholock levels of cringe."
beg to whatever god is out there the chararter never interact with loki, the sheer level of fangirl would open another portal in new work
"Whedon should have realized that Bruce is nearly old enough to be Natasha's father and being unable to have sex on top of that."
ok, why the complain of being old enought? I mean there is a lot of complain in Thor/Jane but the fact he is older that some countries on earth is never one of them, for me is more that Bruce is dating someone with a huge body count around and unlike him, it wasnt an accident
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"![]()
I considered that possibility, but to be honest given the MCU's track record with romances I couldn't tell whether it was supposed to be a genuine attempt or deliberately bad.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Honestly whenever anyone starts complaining about fangirls, all it sounds like to me is 'stop enjoying things the wrong way'
Forever liveblogging the Avengers

I want her to be a more active love interest. Letting Lupita be awesome and not consigning her to the "she's only their to be the GF" is very much the more appealing option to me. Basically perhaps more a Peggy Carter type than a Jane Foster/Betty Ross one. Perhaps she could be the head of the Dora Milaje or something? That way you can have both (she's a LI yet also awesome in her own right).
Romances aren't inherently bad, if they're written well and it doesn't feel like the female is just there to be the hookup for the hero. As others have said, Cap/Peggy and Tony/Pepper (curse you CW, that was not cool) are two good examples of well-done romances. And on TV you have Coulson/Rosalind Price or even Mockingbird/Hunter after awhile. On the other hand, you have Thor/Jane, Cap/Sharon, etc which are, less so.
