Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I've heard rumors about how Marvel is aware of the mediocre reception to the thor films and wants ragnarok to be better but nothing solid/confirmed on that front.

I would like for it to be an at least above-average movie. Haven't seen Dark World, was turned off enough from thor 1 that i thought it wouldn't be worth my time.

I've been fine with both Thor movies.

So once again, I'm the only sane person on the internet.tongue

I'm curious as to how it's gonna to work into future shit with the Infinity War.

It's not just rumors. Feige pretty much said so in as diplomatic a way possible.

Lupita Nyong'o is in talks for Black Panther.

I am reasonably excited for Ragnarok, so I'm willing to give it a chance.

@Wehrmact

It wouldn't surprise me on that front, to be honest. Plus, them adding in the Hulk is probably as a compromise for the rights issues. Either way, it'd be really fun to see Hulk and Thor interacting. I like the idea of Banner just being totally lost as to what the hell is going on in all these crazy realms Thor's taking him to.

Maybe I'm too idealistic, but I think that since Marvel hasn't wowed with the previous Thor movies, they're doubling their efforts to make sure they make the best possible Thor movie.

Make mine Marvel.

I'm more excited for Ragnarok than I'd been after finding out Natalie Portman refuses to come back. I liked her performance but hated the way the writers used her character, so while I'm sorry to see her go, I'm also glad to hear that Ragnarok isn't going to be about "Thor and Jane's undying, epic weekend fling TRUE LOVE!"

I would love for her to stick around, just not as "Thor's Girlfriend". Both characters got Strangled by the Red String.

[up] Her performance?

She didn't suck i guess but she may as well have been wearing a shirt that said 'No more multi film deals'.

I'm very excited for Ragnarok because it's being directed by Taika Waititi, who directed this movie and it's hillarious. I have no idea if he's really the right man for the job, but I'm more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

[up][up] Yes. By not forcing in romantic subplots anymore. Not using their few female characters as Love Interest.

The MCU's hit or miss with romances. Cap/Peggy and Stark/Pepper (Starkpepper? Pepperstark? Peppersteak!) were fantastic.

It did, but then Gamora refused to participate. Fans are divided as to whether her rejection of the red string is meant to be sincere or not, because then there was the scene on the Ravager ship.

Only time and sequel will tell.

I like Matt/Elektra in Daredevil season 2. And the little bits of Clairdevil in Season 1 before Matt ruined it.

EDIT: Yay, Lupita Nyong'o is in talks for Black Panther! Yessss.

Fitzsimmons. But yeah, the movies had troubles with their romances so far. I think it really depends. If it is not needed (Natasha/Hulk) DON'T do it, and if you have to do it, take care to make the love interest a full fledged character and not some sort of story telling device.

Cap/Peggy (which didn't force itself too hard) and Pepperony (which had more than a movie to develop properly) are the two good ones. Scott/Hope, Thor/Jane, Cap/Sharon, and Widow/Banner were terrible. Quill/Gamora thankfully didn't progress too far but the fact that it was even there in the first place as soon as it was felt pretty forced.

It's funny how Black Widow has romantic chemistry with everyone but her canonical love interest. Her and Hawkeye, Cap, Black Panther, even Tony would've all felt less awkward if they wound up in romance than that.

As for Lupita Nyong'o, it was a matter of time. She's on good terms with Disney going by her appearance in The Jungle Book and Star Wars, and people who make into one Disney thing have a good chance of getting to show up in another. Like with Idris Elba, both of the guys who played Fandral, and the woman who voiced Judy Hopps (who probably pinged their radar from their time on Disney-owned ABC show Once Upon A Time, along with Sebastian Stan).

I don't think Black Widow needed to be in a romance with someone she had a relationship in the comics for it to be good. It only needed actual good writing.

Although considering that the point of the romance subplot in Age of Ultron is that the relationship would not in fact work out, its only real sins were being in an already overpacked movie and Black Widow main subplot being a romance.

I think they tried to set Widow/Hulk in Avenger 1, but they don't have much meaningful interaction beside professional because of the sheer amount of characters and Whedon cares more about smark.

The thing is, if they really wanted to tick off obligatory romance checkboxes they could've just given more screentime to Hawkeye and Laura, like they did with Winter Soldier and Cap visiting old Peggy.

[up] Nyong'o has gone on the record as having specifically asked to play motion-capture characters so that audiences focus on her voice and acting instead of her body. There was an article in Hollywood Reporter criticizing the common attitude in some circles that black characters playing mocap characters is automatically racist and that they should feel obligated to put their bodies on the screen as representation, because sometimes those black actors are doing mocap because they personally just want to as artists, or because in their own mind it's a valid expression of racial progress, and that their choices should be respected rather than scrutinized with a magnifying glass.

And nobody ever talks about Bruce/Betty, but then again nobody remembers that movie
