Go To

Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Oh right, Hulk was the one who punched Ultron away. Yeah, that was actually a pretty dumb move. Then again, the line's "Hulk smash" not "Hulk smart". ...Though apparently he can pilot a Quinjet.

It has autopilot.

Does anybody know how old Wanda is supposed to be during Civil War? Because Tony and Steve both (or just Tony maybe) refer to her as a "kid". I'm pretty sure she's not a teenager, but maybe in her early 20s most likely. Any ideas?

IIRC, there was a Word of God statement earlier in the thread about how she's not a teenager, but because of her inexperience, the Avengers kinda condescend towards her.

Regarding Ultron

I think the biggest thing holding back Ultron is that he feels like the second part of a trilogy that is only tangentially related to the first and third parts. Avengers 1 got us all hyped for Thanos and then Avengers 2 delivered Ultron instead. Playing up his connection to Thanos and the Scepter more might have helped him feel like he has more of a place in the series. As it is, Thanos's contributions to Ultron are so subtextual that some people missed them entirely.

As it was, he kinda comes off as a Creature of the Week that exists somewhere off to the side of the main plot, which limits how high the stakes could really go. Like, guys, Thanos is coming. The world's not going to blow up before he gets here.

In addition, Killian's plan had barely anything to do with Tony overall. He wanted his knowledge and for some reason Pepper, but Tony's though that he created "monsters" is hyperbole.

Pepper was personally motivated. She's the only part that was personally motivated. Killian admits that he wants her as a trophy.

As previously discussed, removing the flashback scene entirely would change next to nothing about the movie. Even this scene could be presented as "Pepper is a trophy of Killian bringing down Iron Man after he called him out in front of the press," instead of "Pepper is a trophy of Killian sticking it to Tony Stark."

Well, the whole terrorist sham plot wouldn't have happened if Tony had solved the Extremis problem in the 90s like he should have.

Why should he have? It wasn't his project. He was just tinkering with the formula she had because that's how a genius spends the downtime during a One-Night Stand.

I'm pretty sure it's a joke based off of a Seinfeld reference.

I've watched nearly every episode of Seinfeld, the joke deserved an explanation.

I just watched the Watercraft clips. I hope Thor Ranagork has the intensity of its fight fight scenes. Wow theres a lot of tension in them and even in normal conversations as well despite the mundane atmosphere

[up] Look Portman's finally escaped and I've heard it's ,mostly not on Earth so I'm willing to at least not dismiss it outright.

Even though the Loki fangirls will be impossible.

Civil War pumped me up more than anything because I'm hoping Marvel is really going all out for Phase 3.

Who gives a shit about Loki fangirls anymore? He hasn't appeared in a movie in three years, so they seem to have calmed down a lot.

I certainly want to know what Loki has been up to...and why he kept sending Sif to earth. I also wonder if he ordered Thor to obtain the Sceptre again (he certainly was not happy that all this power ended up in Vision instead of his hands)

[up] Nah, they have just been hibernating. Sherlock also has long pauses and that doesn't deter the fangirls at all.

Like everything else in the movies so far I would not be surprised if they just ignore the AOS episodes once again.

Mostly I'm more interested in why it's been a year and Thor still hasn't gone back to Earth.

Sif only came to Earth twice in Agents of SHIELD. Once was to get Lorelei (because she was an escaped criminal) and once was because of a Kree (I don't remember if she said she was sent to get him). I don't know if Sif is even gonna have a big role, to be honest.

[up][up][up] And now Freeman and Cumberbacht are both in the MCU.

Mighty Vishnu this is going to hit Superwholock levels of cringe.

I thought it was hilarious that both Cumberbatch and Freeman are in the MCU and they're both playing guys who sound extremely American.

The really hilarious thing is that the actress who played Irene Adler in the RDJ Sherlock Holmes movies will be in Doctor Strange, too.
