Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Well there is this moment with him and Black Widow that seems clearly inspired by King Kong. And he throws Ultron out of the quinjet. (I *think* that was Ultron.)

Which moment with Black Widow?

Also, I forgot how he got in that Quinjet. Thanks. It was an Ultron that he threw out of it.

...Did the Ultrons have any abilities besides flight? Projectiles or anything?

Lasers. I remember they shot some of those Korean doctors.

[up][up]Hulk climbs up... somewhere... and Natasha is clinging to his back. Don't tell me I imagined that.

Okay, I'll give the timeline.

After the ol' "protect the control stick" bit, Hulk punches Ultron's main body away and it hijacks the Quinjet. Nat tries to lullaby Hulk because the fight's almost over, but Ultron in the Quinjet interrupts them. Hulk leaps to the Helicarrier carrying Nat, leaves her there, then jumps to the Quinjet, rips Ultron out, then flies away.

The whole last minute of this.

Oh right, Hulk was the one who punched Ultron away. Yeah, that was actually a pretty dumb move. Then again, the line's "Hulk smash" not "Hulk smart". ...Though apparently he can pilot a Quinjet.

[up][up]Hmm. That video included scenes from the Bana Hulk film, but not the very first scene of him in the MCU.

I feel like we have all seen arguments on line about certain superhero movies that this reminds us of.

Does anybody know how old Wanda is supposed to be during Civil War? Because Tony and Steve both (or just Tony maybe) refer to her as a "kid". I'm pretty sure she's not a teenager, but maybe in her early 20s most likely. Any ideas?

Elizabeth Olsen is actually 27 but I think we're supposed to think she's closer to 22-24.

Chris Evans picks his favorite Cap costume and it's apparently the Stealth Suit.

I like the stealth suit from Cap 2. The dark, navy blue suit from the opening of Winter Soldier when I’m on the Lemurian Star, messing people up on that ship. And in the elevator! That’s my favorite. I have requested it every movie, but the people at Marvel really like a little red. They like a little red in there. Which is fine. It’s Cap; I get it.

Same, Chris Evans, same. The Stealth suit is my favorite too. It's just so badass and black ops-y looking.

I really wanna see one of them actually put the little wings on the helmet. The design looks...unbalanced, I guess would be the word, without it.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

I love this response to Russo directing the next Avengers movies:

"Mr. Whedon... Though many call you a director, there are some who prefer the term "comedian". You've operated with unlimited puns and no supervision. That's something the audience can no longer tolerate."

I feel that it only applied to Age of Ultron. The first Avengers had just the right amount of pun/quips, methinks.

I liked Ultron's snark, actually.

Ultron's snarks are one of the things that made Age of Ultron one of my least favorite MCU movies.

Just to be clear, I think Age of Ultron is a pretty good movie. It's just that it's seriously not for me.

I was also fine with the Snark.

Not sure why others got so up in arms about it, but I guess everyone but me is stupid PEOPLE ARE ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN OPINIONS.

For the record, I really don't think people are stupid for not liking the snark. If I offended anyone, I'm sorry.

I think I would have liked the snarks more if the movie itself didn't take itself too seriously.

Or, if they were dark enough to fit the tone. The Dark Knight actually had a lot of snarks, mostly from the Joker, but they actually blended well in the tone because how utterly morbid they tend to be.

I mean, of course Ultron would be snarky, he's pretty much evil robot nihilist toddler Tony.

Ultron was really non-threatening, due to basically being a character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Natasha's character got derailed to the point where she, a trained spy, was unable to escape a barbed wire fence or w/e. And also she became a boobs trampoline for Bruce for no goddamn reason.

[up][up] And? What, did the Avengers suffered from lack of snarkers or something?

I'm going to add that in my list of "Words and Phrases that I Will Try to Work in a Conversation One of These Days." [lol]

A talk in Yack Fest reminded me.

Does anyone know why Hulk doesn't have his own MCU movie after the first one?
