Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The writers talk a bit about Infinity War. CW spoilers at the link, so be warned.

In the same way that in Civil War, not everyone has the same amount of scenes or lines. I think that you can assume that with so many characters [in Infinity War], we'll have to be as rigorous. These people will have larger stories and these people will have smaller stories.

And hopefully they can flip in some cases - I know a few right off the top of my head, that have a small part [in one movie] and a bigger part [in the other movie]." The people in the background in one, might come to the foreground in the other. There are moments where every damn person who's still alive will be in the same room and [those scenes] are just a nightmare to write, because Marvel being very good about hiring very good actors, it's like the 15th person there has two Oscars. So, yeah, it's crazy

"Every damn person who's still alive." Hmm, could we expect some deaths?

Let me guess, Rhodey will be one of those who has only a few lines. In general he really seems to get the short end of the stick on characterization, and because of it he seems to be the most expendable to the writers, making it a self-reinforcing cycle. Same with Sharon.

My rankings:

8. Thor

9. Guardians of the Galaxy

10. Avengers: Age of Ultron

I do like how Dormammu is Strange's uncle-in-law.

That must make Thanksgiving dinner awkward in the Strange household.

With the caveat that I haven't really seen many of the movies, my ranking would be:

1. Civil War/Winter Soldier

2. Iron Man

5. Avengers

7. The First Avenger

8. Age of Ultron

From what I've heard I'd probably like both Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man. I have issues with the way Marvel portrays Odin and Loki, who are both very different in the original tales, so I'm probably never going to watch the Thor movies. And I've heard so many mixed things about the Iron Man Sequels, I'm not sure where they would end up.

Out of context, that's a good shirt.

Back on the subject of Civil War - the moment of outer-borough solidarity between Spidey and Cap was nice.

MCU Pepper forming the A-Force, in part to establish a superteam which isn't ruined by the ego of her ex, is a plot I'd like to see.

Currently I'd have the cast be... Extremis!Pepper funding it, Sif as field commander, with Gamora, Scarlet Witch and Wasp.

I know that's a team of only five, but I would like the character focus to be tight so none of these women get pushed to characterisation obscurity. (Like Rhodey). Plus, I like people with flashy super powers.

Damn, that's a pretty white cast. Damnit, give us Captain Marvel already so I can put Monica on this team!

[up][up][up][up]Again, that wasn't the fans that came up with that shirt. And if you don't know what it's a take off of, it's a good shirt design.

[up]Monica's better than any of them, but you know she's not going to be the starring Captain Marvel, right? It was going to be a Carol Danvers movie.

I an unable to believe anyone could make a Carol Danvers film without Monica in a supporting role.

I wish to agree, but honestly, I'd rather have a Monica Rambeau movie, with Carol and Kamala in supporting roles. Yes that makes less narrative sense, but I want Monica to be the star.
