Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Assuming the article is accurate, all it means is that some very preliminary talks are happening. It's also possible that she is being brought in not as a director, but as a writer or some other position. Still Marvel has a talent for finding brilliant directors in unexpected places, so I'm not going to rule it out.

On the subject of Captain Marvel in Infinity War, her backstory as a fighter pilot and her subsequent work with NASA makes her an easy character to include regardless of whether or not they have her actually become Captain Marvel before her solo film. It's not a case like, Scott Lang, who wouldn't exactly be crossing paths with the Avengers prior to becoming Ant-Man.

[up] I say it would either be Carol or Mar-vell in IW. Captain Marvel would be the birth of the superhero CM when the two first meet.

I was reading the The Quiet One trope page, and idly thinking about adding the eponymous Winter Soldier. I then realized someone had him beat: Agent Jack Rollins. Even though he appears on screen multiple times throughout the movie, he has a grand total of two lines: at the beginning he asks if Steve has a parachute, and about the midpoint he reports that Steve and Natasha are not at the source of the signal the STRIKE team is tracking. Honestly, I'm not even sure where I came across what his name is.

[up][up][up] I could actually see them fold Carol Danvers's origin story into the climax of Infinity War: Part 1.

That way the Captain Marvel movie can skip the bulk of the introductions and jump straight into her learning about, and eventually mastering, her strange and powerful new abilities.

Honestly, this is ridiculous. This guy from the wrap drops that he heart a rumour that the actress and the director have the same first name, and now everyone keeps looking for combinations. I doubt that Disney would give this movie (especially THIS movie, which could create a giant controversy if not handled right) to a director with that little experience. Even the Russo brothers had a few movies under their belt before Disney tabbed them.

Also, it is not correct that Emily Blunt was the only name thrown around, and she was certainly not the only option Disney looked into. Yeah, the scoop trades all run her name, but that is most likely mostly because it sounds logical that the actress Disney tried to cast two times already would be on this list, too. (BTW, won't she be busy with Mary Poppins?).

[up][up][up]Indeed. Do what they did with Black Panther and basically build her origin into the plot of the team-up movie.

What do you think Marvel should do with the Squadron Supreme if they ever use them?

Just have it be a cold open with the Avengers walking away from the unconscious Squadron Sinister, clearly not having broken a sweat.

[up] Can Marvel be allowed to use Savage Land in the MCU, or cannot due to its association with X-Men?

The Savage Land originated in the X-Men books and is mostly associated with that franchise, so I wouldn't think so.

New question: Was it true Wakanda was used in the MCU as early as Iron Man 2?

So I hate to admit it, considering I've been super critical of Sony-Marvel constantly rebooting the character, but MCU Spidey was actually pretty great. Definitely the best on-screen version of Peter Parker!Spidey I've ever seen, IMO.

Does anyone else ever think about if Marvel would adapt the movies into comic book adaptations? Sometimes I just wanna see those movies turn into comics to see what they'd look like.
