Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

He's got a co-writer credit on the vast majority of the series' episodes.
I feel like Hannibal succeeds where the Punisher, as a character, fails, in that they just sort of let the character do what he does, and leave why they're doing that up to viewer interpretation. All of the nuance and intricacies of his character are unspoken, accentuated naturally by the movement of the plot, which creates the illusion of depth far better than Daredevil's constant half-baked therapy sessions did.
It might be a little late for that, frankly. Lightfoot would do well with a blank slate. But I largely trust him to find some way to break the character without it being horribly forced.
...another problem might be that Hannibal is given to mind games where the Punisher isn't. His actions tend to be rather simple and straightforward. There are a lot of roadblocks here.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Punisher was the show's Breakout Character for many people, so I'm sure he'll be done well.
Yes, over in Western Animation.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I feel like the Punisher could work, but only if handled with extreme care. Namely, you'd need to give him plenty of Pet the Dog moments while still hammering in what he does and why he does it.

This song needs more love.I'm not sure what you mean. He's been published in his own series in some form or another since the 80's. He's getting a new book fairly soon too.

So I just learned Michael Keaton was offered the Big Bad role in Spider-Man Homecoming but rejected it.
Which Spider-Man villain could you have seen Keaton as? It's almost obviously no Venom or Carnage. No Rhino either. Kraven needs more of a bare chested peak shape macho man. This setting already has a Kingpin, and Keaton wouldn't fit that either. My pick is Mysterio, since quirky roles with a tad of showmanship are Keaton's best.

A bit too obvious, what with the Birdman motif and that, plus he's kind of lacking for a movie's Big Bad. Maybe as part of a Big Bad Diumvirate. But I think they'd aim for more of a curveball.

Time frame for when we'll find out who's playing Carol Danvers. Chances are if it's not Emily Blunt who is becoming increasingly unlikely then in the usual MCU tradition of dark horse castings it'll probably be someone people weren't expecting, possibly not even a natural blonde.
I usually don't do fan casting, but this time around I lean towards Kathrine Winneck. She has exactly the right level of experience to become the break-out star of a big franchise, and she fits the role perfectly...the only question marks are her height (she is not that big, but also not as small as she looks in Vikings...the other actors in the show are just really, really big) and her age (but then this would make is easier for her to play a experienced woman).
Either way, we will know sure. Generally speaking I think it would be better if Marvel picks an actress who isn't already known for a big franchise role and who isn't THAT famous yet. Benedict Cumberbatch was the first actor they cast at the high of his popularity. All the other main characters are played by actors who were at the time of their casting either in a career slump, middle tier actors who were known in the industry but not by the general audience, or actors who had their big break out with Marvel.

I would skip the Punisher series but the guy they picked to run it seems like he might actually know what he's doing, so. I'll probably give it at least a couple of episodes.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.
