Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Anyone else almost hoping for a post-credits reveal that WHIH News is run by J. Jonah Jamesson? wink

The stinger could be a newsflash where they blame the whole event on Spider-Man.

Marvel, make this happen. I need to hear JK Simmons say 'masked menace' one more time.

I was actually quite surprised that the Russo Brothers were aware of Honest Trailers enough to try to make their movies "Honest Trailer-proof." More filmmakers ought to try that. smile

Couldn't keep it Cinema Sins proof though. tongue

Anyways, I really think the Russo Brothers might just be two of the best action directors out there currently, which is even more amazing considering that they started with rom-coms and the like before WS. How does that work?

After watching Sins of Cinema Sins of Sherlock Holmes, I'm convinced the only way to be Cinema Sins proof is not exist

what with the extreme nitpickery and not paying attention to the movie on display.

Cinema Sins isn't a very good critical vehicle.

It'd worked to their advantage not coming from an action background, I say, in their previous works had to focus more on storyline and character to occupy interest. Even veteran action directors make the mistake of honing their expertise on spectacle and fights and thus forget about the story that needs to support it. Or, worse, they expect the action scenes to distract from the wafer-thin story.

Their specialty is in handling Cast Calculus, which is the most important aspect of an endeavor like this. As long as they have a good enough eye to proofread it they can delegate responsibility for the fight scenes to the writers and choreographers, because their job is to make sure it works in the sense of fitting in with the plot and characters.

I'm not really interested in this. Punisher was good in small doses but I don't think he can sustain a show.

The good thing about this here invention called the computer is if you don't like shows you can just not watch them.

Steve Lightfoot, the writer/executive producer from Hannibal, will serve as showrunner.

Here's a thought on the Punisher series, perhaps instead of telling the story primarily from the Punisher's perspective, tell it primarily from the perspective of the crime boss whose organization he's going after. So instead of being the central protagonist, the Punisher would be a sort of Out of Context Villain.

To be fair comicwriter, I couldn't have known Daredevil Season 2 was going to be bad until sat through it. Same with this. Unless the reviews are really obvious I won't know until I'm there.

@Falrinn, I like that idea.

With Punisher and only getting two Netflix shows a year there's a good reason to be dismayed

Although I'm not surprised. His half of the DD S2 stuff was well received and Marvel loves success.

They aren't supposed to be. They're a comedy series. Nobody really thinks, "Scene does not contain a lap dance," is a legitimate criticism, do they?

Punisher Series

I'm thrilled and I look forward to seeing where they go with it.

Eh, Daredevil Season 2 had a lot of issues, but the Punisher was not one of them.

While the Punisher was the best part of Daredevil Season 2, what angered me the MOST about it was the sequel bait at the end. I don't think that the Punisher works as a protagonist. And I would honestly prefer to get more Jessica Jones.

But I'll naturally watch it, simply because I watch everything in the MCU, weather I am interested or not. To be fair, they haven't let me down yet. Still, I can't feel any excitement for this one. For the very first time I really don't care for one of their projects.
