Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Woah, that's an unexpected character.

I don't like them, but I am fond of his brother

It's very funny that he was actually beaten to the MCU by Vision.

The more significant spoiler would be that this confirms part of the movie will take place on present day Earth.

Okay, can I just say how amusing it is to me that In the MCU there's an osca-bait bio pic of Tony Stark where he is plaid by a Nathan Fillion character? I just love that. It actually really fun world building.

[up] I've been hoping that they would reveal stuff like that for a while. Like, if there was still a Captain America cartoon in the 60's in this universe, or if Tony set up merchandising for the Avengers and stuff.

Would set up for some great meta-jokes too. The Life and Death of Nicholas J. Fury, with the titular role played by Denzel Washington, famous for his roles in Star Wars and Pulp Fiction.

I like to think Sam Jackson exists in this universe and Steve was very confused the first time he watched the Star Wars movies.

I do love seeing superheroes effect the culture of the setting.

Things like in the 616 the Norse religion had a massive intake of practitioners after Thor became a public figure.

I like how Avengers' ending shows some stuff like that, like people getting the Tony Stark facial hair treatment, people imitating the Hulk, ect.

C. Robert Cargill talking about why the Ancient one is white.

Explained, that makes a lot of sense. I didn't think about the political issues going on over there right now.

[down] I must have missed it.

Everything the guy says is true. It's cool that it seems they wanted the Ancient one to be female from very early on, before they decided her race, but damn, if you have to make her non-asian, making her white is the least inventive solution. Make her middle eastern or African.

Yeah, that arguably would have been better.

I know Swinton is known for being androgynous/ageless, and of course the character is called The Ancient One, but at least from the trailer, there's nothing really unusual about her appearance- she just looks like a white woman with a shaved head.

If they were that dead-set on retaining the Orientalist trappings of the character a Middle Eastern or South Asian guru-type Ancient One would've been fine without looking too out of place, and without offending Chinese government weenies, while also avoiding Interchangeable Asian Cultures (since it's obvious to everyone that South Asians are a different "race" from East Asians).

André the Black Nerd at the Red (and Blue) Carpet Premiere of Captain America: Civil War

...How does he get to be so lucky? It's because of his You Tube cred, right?

Actually, I don't know if I could swallow being so close to celebrities. The closest I ever got to seeing a celebrity was seeing Martin Olson (Marceline's Dad) at a presentation on adults and comic books at the 2015 Miami Book Fair and even though I didn't talk to him, it felt so weird seeing him in real life.

And hey, I might be crazy...but that guy with the phone at the 1:13 mark...was that...Hideo Kojima?

Pretty casually dressed if it's Kojima.

Oddly funny surprise when the caption said "Stan Lee" and it instead showed a young Asian guy who Lee happened to be standing directly behind of.

I wonder how he'd feel about doing a licensed game for the MCU.

I mean, The Winter Soldier already had lots of butts, cyborgs, assassins in bondage gear, homoeroticism, live action archival footage, people going undercover, lengthy government conspiracies, a big tweest, tragic backstories, and cyberpunk themes.

I thought he said he wanted to make a Spider-Gwen game but that was actually the Bayonetta guy.
